Is This Worth It?
Estimate the real cost of a purchase or subscription, calculate cost per use, test what happens if you use it less than expected, and review the assumptions that matter before you decide.
Describe the purchase
Enter your own facts. The calculator handles the arithmetic locally in your browser. The written analysis uses only the information and assumptions you provide.
Privacy: the cost calculations happen locally in your browser. When you run the written analysis, your structured inputs are sent to the AI service used by this tool to generate the explanation. Do not enter passwords, account numbers, private identity data, or other sensitive information.

How the “Is This Worth It?” calculator works
1. Enter your own facts
Use the actual price, realistic ownership period, expected usage and known extra costs. The tool does not look up product facts for you.
2. Check the math
The browser calculates estimated total cost, total uses and cost per use before any AI explanation is generated.
3. Stress-test your assumptions
Compare your expected usage with 75% and 50% scenarios so an optimistic usage estimate does not hide a much higher cost per use.
How cost per use is calculated
For a one-time purchase, estimated total cost is the purchase price plus known extra costs, minus the resale value you enter. For a subscription, it is the expected number of paid billing periods multiplied by the subscription price, plus known extras.
Cost per use is then estimated total cost divided by estimated total uses. The result is only as realistic as your inputs, which is why the calculator also shows lower-usage scenarios.
Important: cost per use is useful for frequently used products and subscriptions, but it cannot measure every benefit. Safety, quality, reliability, convenience, enjoyment, accessibility and time saved may matter even when they are difficult to price.
One purchase vs comparing several options
Use Is This Worth It? when you want to examine one purchase or subscription against its cost, likely usage, friction and an existing substitute. If you are choosing between several competing options, use the Decision Helper instead.
If a confusing policy, offer, email or set of terms is stopping you from evaluating the purchase, the Explain This For Me tool can help you understand the wording before you decide.
When this tool is useful — and when it is not
Useful for
Everyday products, software, subscriptions, courses, services, upgrades and other ordinary purchases where you can estimate cost and usage.
Less useful for
Choices where the value is mostly emotional, symbolic, safety-related or impossible to estimate from usage frequency alone.
Not a substitute for
Professional advice on investments, debt, loans, insurance, legal commitments, medical spending or other high-stakes decisions.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator tell me whether I should buy something?
No. It makes the cost and usage assumptions easier to inspect and gives a neutral explanation based on the information you entered. You make the final decision.
What does “cost per use” mean?
It is the estimated total cost divided by the number of times you expect to use the purchase during the period you entered.
Why does the calculator show 75% and 50% usage?
People often overestimate future use. The lower-usage scenarios show how sensitive the value case is if reality falls short of your original assumption.
How are yearly subscriptions calculated?
The calculator assumes whole annual billing periods. For example, an 18-month expected duration is treated as two annual payments because annual subscriptions are commonly charged by the full year.
Does the AI know current product prices or reviews?
No. The analysis is instructed to rely only on the facts and assumptions you provide and not to invent specifications, reviews, warranties, prices, promotions or alternatives.
Is my information processed locally?
The arithmetic is calculated in your browser. The structured inputs used for the written explanation are sent to the AI service used by the tool, so do not enter sensitive personal or account information.
