URL Encoder & Decoder — Free Online Tool

Encode a query value or full URL, decode percent-encoded text, and understand form-style + signs without breaking your link.

URL components · Full links · Query strings · UTF-8 text

Encode one query parameter value, search term or path segment. Reserved characters such as &, = and / are encoded.

0 input characters

0 output characters

Choose a mode, enter text and select Encode or Decode.

Note: This page processes input with JavaScript in your browser; it does not send the text to a conversion service. URL encoding is not encryption. Do not put passwords, private tokens or personal data in a URL.

How to use the URL encoder and decoder

  1. Choose a mode: Select a single URL component for an individual value, Complete URL for an existing link, or Form value for plus-sign space handling.
  2. Enter your text: Paste a search term, URL, query value or percent-encoded string into the input field.
  3. Encode or decode: Choose an action and click the conversion button. Malformed percent-encoding displays an error without changing your input.
  4. Use the result: Copy it, or send the result back to the input to perform the reverse action. For a complete URL, Inspect query reveals decoded parameter names and values without opening the link.

Which URL encoding mode should I choose?

Query value / component

Use for one search term, query parameter value or individual path segment. Encoding tea & coffee keeps its ampersand from becoming a new query parameter.

Complete URL

Use when a full link already contains https://, ? and &. This mode preserves URL structure, so it is not a substitute for encoding each parameter value correctly.

Form value

Use for form-style query values where spaces are represented by +. In this mode, an actual plus sign becomes %2B, keeping it distinct from a space.

Practical rule: Building a URL from separate pieces? Encode each query value before adding & separators. Encoding a broken full URL cannot reliably tell which ampersands belong to values and which separate parameters.

URL encoding examples: %20, + and %26

Readable value
hello world & tools
Component mode output
hello%20world%20%26%20tools
Form value
coffee + tea
Form mode output
coffee+%2B+tea

A space is %20 in component encoding and + in form encoding. The sequence %26 stands for a literal ampersand within a value, whereas an unencoded & separates parameters in a typical query string.

Fix common URL encoding problems

My full link became %3A%2F%2F

You encoded the entire URL as one component. Use Complete URL mode for an existing link; encode its individual parameter values separately when constructing it.

Spaces show as plus signs

Form-style encoding uses + for a space. Choose Form value to decode it as a space. Other decoding modes leave literal plus signs unchanged.

Decoding says invalid input

A stray %, incomplete escape or invalid UTF-8 byte sequence cannot be decoded correctly. Check the source text rather than removing characters at random.

Frequently asked questions

Should I encode a complete URL or just its query value?

Encode an individual query value when constructing a link. Complete URL mode is for an existing URL whose delimiters need to remain recognizable. Neither mode repairs ambiguous or incorrectly assembled parameters automatically.

Why does decoding %2520 produce %20 instead of a space?

The percent sign itself was encoded as %25. Decode the result a second time only if you know the original value was intentionally double-encoded; repeated decoding can change a value's meaning.

Does the tool support emojis and non-English text?

Yes. The browser's built-in encoding functions use UTF-8 percent-encoding. Invalid UTF-8 sequences and malformed Unicode input produce a clear error.

Does URL encoding make data private?

No. Percent-encoding is reversible text representation, not encryption. Avoid putting secrets or sensitive data in links, including query parameters.

Can I inspect a link's tracking parameters?

Yes. Paste a complete HTTP or HTTPS URL, then click Inspect query to view its decoded parameter names and values, including repeated parameters. This action does not open the link.
