How to Use the Random Color Generator

  1. Choose Pure Random for unrestricted color discovery, or use Inspiration Preset when you want a loose visual direction.
  2. Select a style such as pastel, soft, vivid or deep if you want to narrow the result.
  3. Generate a color and compare the black and white text contrast shown directly below the color codes.
  4. Copy HEX, RGB, HSL or CSS and use the color in your website, interface, graphic or other design.

Found a color you like? Copy its HEX value and open the Color Palette Generator to build a coordinated multi-color palette around it.

How the Random Color Generation Works

In Pure Random + Any color mode, the tool generates independent red, green and blue channel values across the complete 24-bit RGB color space. When your browser supports the Web Crypto API, the generator uses crypto.getRandomValues(); otherwise it falls back to standard browser randomness.

Color styles narrow saturation and lightness ranges. Inspiration Presets also narrow hue ranges to create fresh variations within a loose visual direction. Presets are for inspiration only and are not official brand-color recommendations.

The generator also avoids immediately repeating the previous color. Recent colors are stored only in your browser so you can return to a color you generated earlier.

Check Whether Black or White Text Is Easier to Read

For every generated color, this tool calculates the contrast ratio against both black and white and recommends the stronger of the two. A ratio of at least 4.5:1 is the WCAG minimum commonly used for normal-size text.

Passing this one comparison does not automatically make an entire website or interface accessible. Text size, other color pairs, hover states, focus states, icons and other interface elements still need separate evaluation.

For the official accessibility criteria, see the W3C explanation of WCAG contrast minimum requirements .

HEX vs. RGB vs. HSL vs. CSS

HEX is a compact hexadecimal representation such as #496E7A and is commonly used in design tools and CSS.

RGB expresses the same color through its red, green and blue channel values, such as rgb(73, 110, 122).

HSL represents hue, saturation and lightness. It is useful when you want to reason about whether a color should become lighter, darker or more saturated.

CSS copies the generated HEX color as a custom property, making it easy to paste the result into a stylesheet and reuse it.

Turn One Random Color Into a Usable Design

  • Buttons: compare black and white text, then test hover, active and focus states.
  • Backgrounds: use the contrast results as a starting point before adding real text and interface elements.
  • Accent colors: use the generated color for borders, highlights or decorative details, but do not rely on color alone to communicate important meaning.
  • Gradients: copy the HEX value and continue in the CSS Gradient Generator .

A random color is only one swatch, not a complete color system. If you need coordinated colors for a website, brand or design, use the Color Palette Generator instead of generating unrelated colors one after another.

Random Color Generator FAQ

Does the generator create a different color every time?

It avoids immediately repeating the current color. Pure Random + Any color can generate across the complete six-digit HEX range, while style and preset selections intentionally narrow the possible results.

Can I use the generated HEX, RGB or HSL value in CSS?

Yes. All three formats represent the same generated color. You can also use Copy CSS to copy the color as a CSS custom property.

Does the contrast result guarantee accessibility?

No. It checks only black and white text against the current generated color. Your final design may contain other foreground colors, text sizes, components and interface states that require separate evaluation.

Does this tool generate complete color palettes?

No. This page intentionally generates one color at a time. Use the separate Color Palette Generator when you need multiple coordinated swatches.
