Five Ways to Reverse Text: Examples

Different reversal modes solve different problems. Use the examples below to choose the output you actually need.

1. Reverse all characters

Input:

Hello World

Output:

dlroW olleH

Reverses the entire text character by character.

2. Reverse word order

Input:

Hello World

Output:

World Hello

Moves words in reverse order within each line, while keeping the original spaces between word positions.

3. Reverse each word

Input:

Hello World

Output:

olleH dlroW

Keeps word positions but reverses the characters inside each word.

4. Reverse line order

Input:

First line
Second line
Third line

Output:

Third line
Second line
First line

Moves the last line to the top without reversing the characters within each line.

5. Reverse each line

Input:

Hello
World

Output:

olleH
dlroW

Reverses each line separately without changing the order of lines.

Tip: “Backwards text” normally means reverse character order. Reversing characters is not the same as creating visually mirrored or upside-down letters.

Which Text Reversal Mode Should You Use?

  • Backwards names and short captions: Choose Reverse all characters.
  • Reorder words in a sentence: Choose Reverse word order. This mode processes each line independently.
  • Word puzzles: Choose Reverse each word to keep the words in their original positions.
  • Reverse a list: Put each item on its own line and choose Reverse line order. For random ordering rather than reverse ordering, use the List Shuffler .
  • Make every line backwards: Choose Reverse each line to retain line order.

Use the Text Case Converter if you need to change uppercase, lowercase or title case instead of reversing letter order.

Spacing, Emoji and Text-Reversal Limitations

Reverse all characters changes the position of spaces and line breaks along with the text. Reverse word order moves non-whitespace text chunks within each line and leaves the whitespace positions in place.

For a multiline list, Reverse line order is generally the more useful choice.

Modern browsers with Intl.Segmenter can keep many emoji sequences and combined characters together when reversing. Older browsers use a simpler character fallback, so unusual emoji or combining marks may not behave the same way.

Right-to-left scripts and bidirectional text can also display differently from their underlying character order.

This backwards text generator does not create mirrored Unicode symbols or upside-down font effects. It changes the order of text.

It is not encryption, and reversed text should not be used to hide confidential information.

Privacy note: The transformation code runs locally in your browser and does not send your input to a text-processing server. As with any website, avoid entering sensitive information on shared devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reverse text without reversing the letters in each word?

Select Reverse word order. For example, “Hello World” becomes “World Hello.” Each line is processed independently.

How do I reverse the letters in every word but keep the word order?

Select Reverse each word. “Hello World” becomes “olleH dlroW.” Spaces and line positions stay in place.

Can I reverse a multiline list?

Yes. Enter one item per line and select Reverse line order. The last item moves to the top. Use Reverse each line if you want to reverse letters on each line instead.

Does this tool create mirror text or upside-down letters?

No. It reverses character, word or line order. It does not convert letters into lookalike Unicode mirror or upside-down characters.

Is this text reverser free?

Yes. You can enter text, select a reversal mode and copy the result without signing up.

Why does emoji or right-to-left text sometimes look different?

Emoji can consist of several code points, and right-to-left writing uses display rules that differ from plain character order.

The tool uses grapheme-aware reversal where browser support allows, but not every script or visual effect can be guaranteed to render as expected.
