The Windows app is convenient, but convenience should not replace a quick privacy review—especially before you connect email, documents, calendars or third-party services.

Does the Gemini Windows App Run AI Locally?
Installing a desktop application does not mean the Gemini models suddenly run entirely on your PC.

1. Confirm your Windows version
Google currently requires Windows 10 or later. If the computer runs an older version of Windows, repeatedly downloading the installer will not fix the compatibility problem.
2. Check RAM and available storage
Confirm that the PC has at least 8 GB of RAM and at least 200 MB of available storage for installation.
3. Check your internet connection
Gemini depends on an internet connection. If the application opens but cannot complete requests, test the connection before reinstalling the app.
4. Confirm the account has Gemini access
Personal accounts and managed work or school accounts do not always have identical access. On an organizational account, an administrator may control whether Gemini is enabled.
5. Check for an app update
Google’s Windows help page says the app can notify you when an update is available. Restart the application to install the update when prompted.
6. Check for an Alt + Space conflict
Another Windows utility may already use the same keyboard combination. Google’s desktop documentation says Gemini’s shortcut can be customized in the app settings, so change it if necessary.
7. Do not assume a missing feature means installation failed
Feature availability varies. Some capabilities require a particular account, country, subscription or rollout, while some native desktop features have not yet reached Windows.
8. Verify that you installed Google’s current app
If you previously installed an unofficial Gemini desktop wrapper, an older Google desktop product or another third-party application, do not assume it automatically became the new official Gemini Windows app. Return to Google’s official desktop page and compare what you installed.
