Last verified: October 2026 · U.S. availability and account controls checked against current OpenAI documentation
Is ChatGPT Finances free? Yes. ChatGPT Finances is now available to eligible users in the United States on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans across web, iOS and Android. You can connect supported financial accounts through Plaid, connect credit-report data separately through Experian, and ask ChatGPT questions grounded in the financial information those connections provide.
The important part is understanding what ChatGPT Finances Free actually gives you. ChatGPT can help organize and explain connected data about spending, subscriptions, bills, net worth, investments and credit, but it does not become your bank, broker or financial adviser—and it cannot move your money for you.
Is ChatGPT Finances Free?
Yes. OpenAI expanded Finances to Free and Go users in the United States on October 2, 2026. Plus and Pro users also have access.
The feature is currently documented for eligible users in the United States on web, iOS and Android. Being on a supported plan does not mean every financial institution will necessarily be connectable.
U.S. availability matters: if you do not see Finances outside the United States, upgrading your ChatGPT plan is not necessarily the solution. Regional availability and rollout status are separate from subscription level.
What Is ChatGPT Finances?
ChatGPT Finances is a dedicated area for connecting supported financial information and asking questions using that financial context.
Depending on the data you connect, the dashboard may help you review:
Spending
Review spending categories, monthly patterns and recent changes using the transaction data available from your connected accounts.
Bills & Subscriptions
Identify recurring payments, subscriptions and expected upcoming charges when the necessary data is available.
Net Worth
Combine supported account balances into a broader view of assets and liabilities over time.
Investments
Review portfolio allocation and daily changes in supported stock and ETF holdings without giving ChatGPT trading authority.
Credit
With a separate Experian connection, review a VantageScore 3.0 credit score, reported accounts and related credit factors.
Finance Questions
Ask questions about your connected data in the Finances page or in a normal ChatGPT conversation.
How to Connect Financial Accounts to ChatGPT
OpenAI uses Plaid to connect supported banks, credit-card issuers, brokerages and other financial institutions.
OpenAI says the initial sync usually takes a few minutes, although rare cases may take several hours. The Finances page shows the last sync time and whether an account needs attention.
What Is Plaid in ChatGPT Finances?
Plaid is the connection layer used by ChatGPT Finances for supported financial accounts. It helps establish the link between your financial institution and ChatGPT and shares the financial data needed for the features you authorize.
You choose which accounts to connect.
Plaid Connection
Used for supported financial accounts such as banks, credit cards, brokerages and other eligible institutions.
Experian Connection
Used separately for credit-report information, your Experian credit report and VantageScore 3.0.
Plaid vs. Experian in ChatGPT
These are two separate connections. Connecting your bank through Plaid does not automatically connect your credit report, and you do not need a bank connection to use the Experian credit-score feature.
| Connection | Main purpose | Examples of information |
|---|---|---|
| Plaid | Connect supported financial accounts | Balances, transactions, investments and other data made available by the institution |
| Experian | Connect credit-report information | VantageScore 3.0, reported accounts, balances, limits, utilization, payment history and inquiries |
Important: when Experian asks you to verify your identity, enter personal information and verification codes in Experian’s verification form—not in a normal ChatGPT message.
What Can ChatGPT See After You Connect Accounts?
ChatGPT can only work with the financial data made available through your authorized connections. That does not mean every institution provides every type of information.
Depending on the source, ChatGPT may be able to use information about:
Balances & Transactions
Available account balances and transaction history provided through the connection.
Spending Categories
Categorized transaction information used to estimate where money is going.
Recurring Charges
Patterns that may help identify subscriptions, bills and expected payments.
Investment Holdings
Holdings and allocation data when the institution provides supported investment information.
Net-Worth Context
Supported assets and liabilities used to show changes in net worth over time.
Credit Information
Credit-report information shared through your separate Experian authorization.
An institution may provide a balance without full transaction history, or omit investment holdings, loan details, due dates, APRs or other fields. If something appears incomplete, check the account’s connection status and last sync time.
What ChatGPT Finances Cannot Do
Connecting financial data does not give ChatGPT transaction authority over your accounts.
Do not treat ChatGPT Finances as an authoritative financial record. It can help organize and explain information, but you remain responsible for financial decisions. Verify important balances, tax information, credit information and investment details against the original institution or qualified professional when the consequence matters.
Why Does My ChatGPT Finances Data Look Wrong?
A number that looks wrong does not always mean the underlying bank account is wrong. The Finances dashboard depends on what data was supplied, when it last synced and how transactions were categorized.
| Problem | Possible reason | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Spending looks too high | Transfers or credit-card payments may be counted as spending | Ask which transactions were included |
| Duplicate amount | Pending and posted versions of the same transaction may both appear | Check transaction status and dates |
| Account missing | The account may not be connected or the institution may not provide the needed data | Check the Accounts tab and connection status |
| Old balance | The source may not have synced recently | Check the last sync time |
| Wrong category | A transaction may have been categorized incorrectly | Ask ChatGPT to explain or reclassify the transaction |
| Credit balance differs from bank balance | Experian reflects the balance last reported by the lender, not necessarily live activity | Compare report dates before assuming one source is wrong |
OpenAI explicitly says incomplete synchronization, missing accounts, transfers, credit-card payments, reimbursements and duplicate pending transactions can make a spending breakdown appear inaccurate.
Useful verification prompt: ask ChatGPT which accounts, transactions and dates it used to calculate a number instead of accepting the total without checking the source.
Why Don’t I See ChatGPT Finances?
If ChatGPT Finances is missing, work through the likely causes instead of assuming you must immediately upgrade.
Why Can’t I Connect My Bank to ChatGPT?
A failed connection does not always mean your password is wrong.
OpenAI lists several possible causes, including incorrect login information, a locked account, temporary institution downtime or a required security step.
What Are Financial Memories in ChatGPT?
Connected accounts are only one part of the Finances experience. ChatGPT can also save selected financial context as financial memories.
Examples could include:
Savings Goals
A goal such as saving for a car or maintaining a minimum checking balance.
Financial Obligations
Context about a mortgage, private loan or recurring obligation that may not appear in connected data.
Shared Expenses
Context such as rent being split with another person.
Planned Purchases
A future purchase you want ChatGPT to consider in later finance conversations.
OpenAI says you can view or delete financial memories from the Finances page. They are separate from the live account connection.
Disconnecting a bank does not automatically erase everything previously discussed. Conversation history and financial memories are separate controls and may need to be deleted separately.
Is ChatGPT Finances Data Used for Model Training?
OpenAI says conversations using Finances follow the same model-training preference you choose for ChatGPT more broadly. That preference can be reviewed under Settings → Data controls.
This is different from claiming that every piece of connected financial information is always or never used in every circumstance. The correct approach is to review your current Data Controls and provide only the information you actually need for the task.
If you regularly use AI with private information, read our guide to what not to share with ChatGPT before adding extra financial context manually.
Can Temporary Chat Access Connected Finances?
No. OpenAI currently says that Temporary Chat does not access your connected financial accounts and does not use or create memories for personalization.
Temporary chats also do not appear in normal chat history.
This is an important distinction: Temporary Chat is not simply a normal finance conversation with less history. OpenAI says connected financial accounts are not accessed there.
How to Disconnect ChatGPT Finances
There are several different controls, and they do not all do the same thing.
| Action | What it affects | What it does not automatically remove |
|---|---|---|
| Remove one Plaid-connected account | Stops that account from supplying connected financial data | Other accounts, conversation history and financial memories |
| Disconnect Finances | Removes connected financial data from ChatGPT | Past conversations and financial memories |
| Disconnect Experian | Stops Experian from sharing credit-score and report data with ChatGPT | Bank connections, past conversations and financial memories |
| Delete financial memories | Removes saved financial context used for future finance conversations | Connected accounts or old chats |
| Delete finance conversations | Removes those conversations according to ChatGPT’s deletion rules | Connected accounts and separately saved financial memories |
OpenAI says that when you disconnect Finances or remove a Plaid-connected account, the synced account data is deleted from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days. Data associated with that ChatGPT connection is also deleted from Plaid within 30 days in accordance with Plaid’s policies.
For Experian, OpenAI says the underlying Experian credit-report data is deleted from OpenAI systems within 30 days after disconnection.
Disconnecting is not the same as deleting past conversations. If you want to remove previously discussed information, review your conversations and financial memories separately.
The Designs24hr FINANCE Check
Use this framework before connecting financial accounts or relying on a finance dashboard number.
FINANCE: A 7-Step Connection Check
F Feature: decide what you actually want ChatGPT Finances to help you understand.
I Institution: confirm that the bank, card issuer, brokerage or credit source you need is supported.
N Necessary accounts: connect only the accounts required for the task.
A Accuracy: verify important totals, categories, balances and dates against the original institution.
N No blind trust: treat AI-generated finance summaries as assistance, not an authoritative financial record.
C Controls: review Data Controls, financial memories and account connection status.
E Exit: know how to disconnect the source and remove retained context before you connect.
Use This Accuracy Check Before Trusting a Number
Before relying on a ChatGPT Finances total, move through this short verification chain:
Also check transfers, reimbursements, credit-card payments and pending transactions when a spending total looks unexpectedly high.
Three Useful ChatGPT Finances Prompts
The safest prompts ask ChatGPT to explain the source data rather than jumping directly to a high-stakes financial recommendation.
Review my connected Finances data and show where my spending changed most compared with the previous month. Separate normal purchases, transfers, credit-card payments, reimbursements, recurring bills and subscriptions where the data allows. Flag anything that may be incomplete, duplicated or miscategorized.
List recurring subscriptions visible in my connected finance data. For each one, show the merchant, most recent amount, approximate billing frequency and the transactions that support the pattern. Do not label a transaction as a subscription unless the available data supports that conclusion.
Explain how you calculated this number using my connected finance data. Show which accounts, transactions, categories and date range were included. Identify any missing accounts, stale syncs, pending transactions or uncertain classifications that could change the result.
Should You Connect Your Financial Accounts to ChatGPT?
Connecting accounts makes the most sense when the benefit is specific: understanding spending, locating recurring charges, reviewing account trends or consolidating financial context you would otherwise gather manually.
The argument is weaker when you have no particular task and simply want to connect every account “just in case.”
Use the minimum information needed, verify important numbers and keep high-stakes financial, legal, tax and investment decisions with the appropriate source or qualified professional.
Bottom line: ChatGPT Finances Free can make connected financial information easier to review, but the value comes from better organization and explanation—not from handing control of your money to ChatGPT.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ChatGPT Finances free?
Yes. OpenAI currently lists ChatGPT Finances as available to eligible Free, Go, Plus and Pro users in the United States on web, iOS and Android.
Can Free ChatGPT users connect a bank account?
Eligible U.S. Free users can use ChatGPT Finances and connect supported financial accounts through Plaid. Whether a specific bank or account is available depends on Plaid support and the data the institution provides.
What is Plaid used for in ChatGPT Finances?
Plaid provides the connection between ChatGPT and supported financial institutions. You choose which accounts to connect, and Plaid shares the financial data needed for the authorized Finances features.
Is Experian the same connection as Plaid?
No. Plaid is used for supported financial accounts, while Experian separately provides authorized credit-report and VantageScore 3.0 information. You can use either connection without the other.
Can ChatGPT Finances move my money?
No. OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot move money, pay bills, make trades, change financial-account settings, alter retirement contributions, open or close accounts, or file taxes.
Why does my ChatGPT Finances spending total look wrong?
Incomplete syncing, missing accounts, transfers, credit-card payments, reimbursements, duplicate pending transactions or incorrect categories can affect the result. Check the source accounts, last sync time and the transactions ChatGPT used.
Why can’t I find my bank in ChatGPT Finances?
The institution may not yet be supported by Plaid, may not provide the data required by ChatGPT Finances, or may be temporarily unavailable. Search for alternate institution names before concluding that it is unsupported.
What are financial memories in ChatGPT?
Financial memories are saved financial context such as goals, obligations or planned purchases that ChatGPT can use to make later finance conversations more relevant. They can be viewed or deleted separately from connected accounts.
Can Temporary Chat use my connected bank accounts?
No. OpenAI currently says Temporary Chat does not access connected financial accounts and does not use or create memories for personalization.
What happens when I disconnect ChatGPT Finances?
OpenAI says synced Plaid-connected account data is deleted from OpenAI systems within 30 days after Finances or the account is disconnected, with the data associated with that ChatGPT connection also deleted from Plaid within 30 days under Plaid’s policies. Past conversations and financial memories are separate and may need to be deleted separately.
