Here is how to switch between Default memory and Project-only memory, what actually changes, when Project-only is the better choice, and how Project memory now differs from ChatGPT’s updated Temporary Chat modes.
ChatGPT Projects are useful when a task needs more continuity than a single conversation. A Project can keep related chats, files and instructions together so you do not have to rebuild the same context every time you return.
Memory controls determine how far that context can reach. Default memory favors broader continuity, while Project-only memory creates a tighter context boundary around one Project.
That distinction matters when you are keeping separate research topics, clients, classes, writing projects or other workstreams apart. It is also different from deleting information. If removal is your goal, use our separate guide on how to delete ChatGPT memory completely.
How to Change ChatGPT Project Memory
OpenAI added the ability to edit memory settings on eligible existing Projects in its August 14, 2026 ChatGPT update. You no longer need to create a replacement Project simply to switch an eligible unshared Project between Default and Project-only memory.
Open the Project
In ChatGPT, select the existing Project whose memory behavior you want to change.
Open the three-dot menu
Use the menu associated with the Project rather than the memory controls for your entire ChatGPT account.
Select Project settings
This opens the settings that apply specifically to that Project.
Find Memory
Look for the Project memory control. The exact interface can change as ChatGPT is updated.
Choose Default or Project-only
Select the memory boundary that matches how you want ChatGPT to use context for this Project, then save the setting.
Allow time for the change
OpenAI says a memory-setting change may take a few hours to take effect, so do not assume an immediate response proves the switch failed.
Default vs Project-Only Memory: What Actually Changes?
The simplest way to understand the difference is to think about context boundaries.
Default memory
Best when you want ChatGPT to benefit from your normal saved memories and, where supported by your plan and settings, broader conversation context.
Project-only memory
Best when conversations in the Project should stay grounded in that Project rather than drawing from memories or conversations outside it.
| Context or behavior | Default memory | Project-only memory |
|---|---|---|
| Chats within the same Project | Can be used as Project context. | Can be used as Project context. |
| Saved memories outside the Project | May be referenced when memory is enabled. | Not referenced. |
| Conversations outside the Project | Availability depends on your plan and memory settings. | Not referenced. |
| Project conversations affecting chats outside the Project | Behavior depends on plan and account settings. | Project conversations are kept outside memory used by chats outside the Project. |
| Shared Projects | Not available after the Project becomes shared. | Required. |
| ChatGPT Work inside the Project | May be available where your plan supports it. | Not currently available. |
Which ChatGPT Project Memory Setting Should You Choose?
Neither option is automatically better. The right choice depends on whether you value continuity or separation more for that particular Project.
A useful rule of thumb is:
What Happens When You Switch to Project-Only Memory?
With Project-only memory, ChatGPT can still use conversations from the same Project as context. What changes is the boundary around that Project.
OpenAI says Project-only memory does not reference saved memories or conversations outside the Project. Chats outside the Project also cannot reference conversations from the Project.
That can be useful when broader personalization would create noise. For example, a Project for one research topic may work better when unrelated conversations are not part of the context ChatGPT can draw from.
Does switching memory delete existing chats?
No. Changing the memory mode is not a deletion tool. Your conversations remain part of the Project unless you separately remove or delete them.
Does switching to Project-only delete saved memories?
No. Project-only memory prevents the Project from referencing outside saved memories; it does not erase those account-level memories.
What Happens to Memory in a Shared ChatGPT Project?
Sharing creates a stricter Project boundary.
OpenAI says that once a Project is shared, Project-only memory is turned on automatically. Shared Projects do not gain access to an individual member’s outside memories, custom instructions or context outside the Project.
Shared Projects also cannot be switched back to Default memory. This matters if you are considering sharing a personal Project that currently relies on broader context.
Why Can’t I Change My ChatGPT Project Memory?
If you do not see the expected Memory option, do not immediately assume something is broken. Several conditions can affect what appears in your account.
1. The Project is shared
A shared Project stays on Project-only memory. OpenAI says it cannot be switched back to Default.
2. Required memory settings are not enabled
Project memory depends on personal or workspace memory controls.
OpenAI currently says Enterprise users need Reference saved memories enabled in personal settings and Memory enabled at the workspace level. For other subscriptions, Reference saved memories and Reference chat history generally need to be enabled for Project memory features.
3. Your interface differs from the latest documentation
ChatGPT features and labels can vary across devices, account types and workspace configurations. If the setting is missing, check the latest ChatGPT release notes and Projects documentation before rebuilding the Project unnecessarily.
4. You just changed the setting
OpenAI specifically warns that memory-setting changes may take a few hours to take effect. Test again later rather than repeatedly switching the setting back and forth.
Before You Change Project Memory: 5 Things to Check
- Confirm whether the Project is shared. Shared Projects cannot switch back to Default memory.
- Decide whether you want continuity or separation. Do not choose Project-only simply because it sounds more private or advanced.
- Check your important Project chats and files. Those remain available inside the Project after the memory setting changes.
- Remember that switching is not deletion. Account memories and old conversations are separate controls.
- Consider whether you use ChatGPT Work. OpenAI currently says Work is unavailable in Projects using Project-only memory.
Practical ChatGPT Project Memory Examples
| Situation | Better starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Personal trip planning over several weeks | Default | Your usual preferences may be useful across a continuing Project. |
| Separate research topic | Project-only | Keeps unrelated conversation context outside the Project. |
| Multiple client workspaces | Separate Project-only Projects | Creates cleaner context boundaries between workstreams. |
| Long-running personal writing project | Default may be useful | Broader continuity can help when personal preferences matter. |
| Shared team workspace | Project-only | Shared Projects use Project-only memory automatically. |
| One-off question with no need for Project continuity | Temporary Chat may be better | A Project may add unnecessary structure for a single conversation. |
How to Check the Memory Boundary After Switching
After the setting has had time to apply, use a fresh conversation inside the Project and look for obvious context from unrelated conversations.
You can also use the prompt below as a practical check. It is not proof of backend data isolation because an AI response cannot serve as a complete technical audit of what is stored or accessible.
For this Project, summarize the context you are using to answer me. Separate information from this Project's chats or files from any broader remembered context you believe may be relevant. If you cannot reliably determine the source of a detail, say that clearly instead of guessing.
Use this only as a behavior check. Do not treat an AI-generated answer as proof of storage, deletion or technical isolation.
Project-Only Memory vs Temporary Chat: What’s the Difference?
These features now need a clearer comparison because OpenAI changed Temporary Chat on August 27, 2026.
Project-only memory creates an ongoing workspace. Chats inside the same Project can use other Project conversations as context, while outside saved memories and outside conversations are excluded.
Temporary Chat is designed for a one-off conversation rather than a persistent Project workspace. Temporary Chats start non-personalized by default, but you can now choose personalization before the conversation begins.
| Feature | Project-only memory | Non-personalized Temporary Chat | Personalized Temporary Chat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Designed for | Ongoing, self-contained work | One-off blank-slate conversation | One-off conversation with existing personalization |
| Uses existing saved memories outside the Project/chat | No | No | Yes |
| Uses related conversations | Yes, inside the same Project | No normal personalization context | Can use existing memories and personalization |
| Uses custom instructions | Project behavior follows Project instructions and applicable settings | No | Yes |
| Creates new personal memories while in this mode | Project context can persist inside the Project | No | No |
| Appears in normal chat history | Project chats remain in the Project | No, unless saved | No, unless saved |
| Can be added to a Project while still temporary | Not applicable | No | No |
If you save a Temporary Chat, OpenAI says it becomes a regular conversation and begins following your normal account-level personalization and model-improvement settings.
Temporary Chats also cannot be added to Projects while they remain temporary. If your work needs ongoing Project context, files and repeated conversations, Project-only memory is the more appropriate tool.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change memory on an existing ChatGPT Project?
Yes. OpenAI says eligible unshared Projects can switch between Default and Project-only memory after creation.
How do I change ChatGPT Project memory?
Open the Project, select its three-dot menu, choose Project settings, find Memory, select Default memory or Project-only memory, and save the change.
Can I switch Project-only memory back to Default memory?
Eligible unshared Projects can switch memory modes. A shared Project is different: it remains Project-only and cannot be switched back to Default.
Why don’t I see the Memory option in Project settings?
Possible reasons include the Project being shared, required personal or workspace memory settings being disabled, or differences in the interface available to your account or device. Check OpenAI’s latest Projects documentation before creating a replacement Project.
Does Project-only memory delete my saved memories?
No. Project-only changes what context that Project can reference. It does not automatically delete saved memories from your ChatGPT account.
Does changing Project memory delete chats or files?
No. Memory mode is a context control, not a bulk-deletion tool. Chats and Project files remain unless you separately remove them.
Can a shared ChatGPT Project use Default memory?
No. OpenAI says shared Projects automatically use Project-only memory and cannot be returned to Default memory.
How long does changing Project memory take?
OpenAI says changes may take a few hours to take effect.
Can I use ChatGPT Work in a Project with Project-only memory?
No. OpenAI’s current Projects documentation says ChatGPT Work is not available in Projects using Project-only memory.
Does Temporary Chat use memory?
Not by default. Non-personalized Temporary Chats do not use memory, custom instructions or plugins. If you enable personalization when starting the Temporary Chat, it can use existing memories, custom instructions and plugins, but it still does not create or update memories while it remains temporary.
Can I add a Temporary Chat to a ChatGPT Project?
No. OpenAI’s current Projects documentation says Temporary Chats cannot be added to Projects while they remain temporary.
Final Takeaway
You no longer need to rebuild an eligible unshared ChatGPT Project simply to change its memory boundary. Open the Project’s settings and choose between Default memory for broader continuity and Project-only memory for tighter separation.
The most important limitation is sharing: once a Project is shared, it uses Project-only memory and cannot return to Default. Also remember that changing Project memory does not delete account memories, chats or files.
Temporary Chat now fills a different role. Use Project-only memory when you need an ongoing self-contained workspace. Use a non-personalized Temporary Chat when you want a one-off blank-slate conversation, or a personalized Temporary Chat when you want existing personalization without creating new memories while the conversation stays temporary.
