The ChatGPT Apple Messages plugin lets ChatGPT work with conversations in the Messages app on a supported Mac. Through ChatGPT Work or Codex, it can search and read iMessage, SMS and RCS chats, summarize conversations, help draft replies and—with your approval—send messages through Apple Messages.
The important limitation is easy to miss: this is not a feature for ordinary ChatGPT chats, and for the current release the Messages plugin is included only in the Apple Silicon (arm64) version of the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS.

To use the ChatGPT Apple Messages plugin, open Plugins in the ChatGPT macOS desktop app, install Apple Messages, then start a new Codex or ChatGPT Work chat. Grant the requested macOS permissions and ask ChatGPT to find, summarize, draft or send a message. By default, ChatGPT asks you to approve the message and recipients before it sends anything.
What Is the ChatGPT Apple Messages Plugin?
The Apple Messages plugin is a ChatGPT desktop integration that gives supported ChatGPT workflows controlled access to the Messages app on your Mac. Instead of manually opening a long conversation and searching line by line, you can ask ChatGPT to locate information, summarize a thread or prepare a response.
Read
Use conversation context from supported Messages chats when completing your request.
Search
Ask natural-language questions to locate details inside iMessage, SMS or RCS conversations.
Send
Draft and, after the appropriate approval, send a message through the Messages app.
This makes the integration particularly useful when a message thread contains information you need for a larger task. For example, you could find a date mentioned several days ago, summarize a long conversation before replying, or turn a list of decisions in a chat into action items.
Apple Messages works with Codex and ChatGPT Work. It does not turn Messages into a way to remotely chat with ChatGPT, and it does not currently work from a normal ChatGPT conversation.
If ChatGPT Work is new to you, read what ChatGPT Work is and how it differs from a regular chat before connecting Messages.
What You Need Before You Start
Check compatibility before looking for settings that may not exist on your device.
| Requirement | Current status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT plan | All plans | OpenAI currently lists the Apple Messages plugin as available on all ChatGPT plans. |
| Device | Mac | The integration runs through the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS. |
| Mac processor | Apple Silicon | For the current release, the plugin is included only in the arm64 build for Apple Silicon Macs. |
| Chat type | Work / Codex | Start a ChatGPT Work or Codex chat to use the Messages capability. |
| Regular ChatGPT chat | Not supported | The plugin does not currently operate from an ordinary ChatGPT conversation. |
| ChatGPT web or mobile | Not directly available | The Apple Messages integration runs locally through the supported Mac setup. |
| Message types | iMessage / SMS / RCS | OpenAI lists all three conversation types as readable/searchable through the integration. |
If your Mac uses an Intel processor, the Apple Messages plugin is not included in the current release described by OpenAI. Do not change unrelated macOS privacy settings trying to force the option to appear.
How to Install the ChatGPT Apple Messages Plugin
Open Plugins in the ChatGPT Mac App
Launch the current ChatGPT desktop app on your supported Apple Silicon Mac and open the Plugins area.
Find Apple Messages
Search or browse the plugin directory for Apple Messages, open its details and install it.
Start a New Work or Codex Chat
Create a new ChatGPT Work or Codex conversation. Installing the plugin does not make it usable inside an ordinary ChatGPT chat.
Ask for a Messages Task
Start with a low-risk request such as finding a harmless detail, summarizing a personal test conversation or preparing a draft without sending it.
Review the macOS Permission Request
ChatGPT will need the requested macOS permission before it can read Messages. Read the permission dialog rather than automatically approving it.
Test the integration first with a conversation that contains no sensitive financial, medical, legal, work-confidential or account-security information. Learn exactly what the workflow can read and do before expanding how you use it.
How to Let ChatGPT Read and Search Apple Messages
Once the plugin is installed and the necessary permission has been granted, you can describe what you want to find instead of manually scrolling through the conversation.
The best requests give ChatGPT enough context to identify the correct conversation while avoiding unnecessary access to unrelated messages.
Search my Messages conversation with [person or chat name] and find the message where we discussed [specific topic]. Tell me the relevant detail and enough surrounding context for me to understand it. Do not send any messages.
Adding “Do not send any messages” is useful when your goal is retrieval only. It makes your intended boundary explicit even though sending normally has its own approval step.
Summarize a Long Conversation
Review my recent Messages conversation with [person or group]. Summarize only the key decisions, unanswered questions, dates and action items. Separate confirmed information from anything that is uncertain. Do not draft or send a reply yet.
The phrase “separate confirmed information from anything uncertain” is intentional. A summary should not turn ambiguous wording into a firm commitment.
How to Draft a Text Without Sending It
Draft-only use is the safest place for most beginners to start because you still control the final wording and the send action.
Read the latest relevant messages in my conversation with [person]. Draft a short reply that answers their question and matches the tone of the conversation. Do not invent facts, promises, dates or availability. Show me the draft only and do not send it.
Read the proposed reply yourself. Check names, dates, numbers, commitments and tone before deciding whether the message should be sent.
AI can misunderstand context, sarcasm, implied meaning or an earlier part of the thread. For work, financial, legal, medical, relationship or other consequential messages, treat the generated text as a draft—not as an automatic decision about what you should communicate.
How to Send a Message With ChatGPT
OpenAI’s current workflow asks you to review the message and its recipients before allowing a send. By default, the send happens only after your approval.
- Ask ChatGPT to prepare the message.
- Check the recipient or group conversation carefully.
- Read the complete proposed message.
- Correct inaccurate names, dates, numbers, commitments or tone.
- Approve the send only when both the recipient and message are correct.
Prepare a concise message to [person or chat] saying: [what you want to communicate]. Keep the meaning exactly as provided. Before sending, show me the final message and confirm the intended recipient so I can review both.
When an AI tool can communicate externally as you, the approval screen is your last opportunity to catch the wrong recipient, an invented detail or wording you would not have chosen yourself.
Allow Once vs Always Allow: Which Should You Choose?
OpenAI currently gives you two different approaches to message-send approval. They have very different risk profiles.
Allow Once
Approves that individual send. The next message still requires another approval.
- Keeps you in the review loop.
- Better for new users.
- Better for mixed or sensitive conversations.
- Reduces the chance of an unintended future send.
Always Allow Sending to This Chat
Allows future sends to that particular Messages chat without another send approval.
- Faster for repeated workflows.
- Removes your final per-send confirmation.
- Requires greater trust in the workflow and chat context.
- Should not be enabled simply for convenience.
Keep per-send approval as your default. Persistent sending permission should be a deliberate exception—not the first setting you enable.
How to Turn Per-Send Approval Back On
If you previously allowed persistent sending and want ChatGPT to ask again before sending to that conversation:
- Open Settings in ChatGPT.
- Go to Computer use.
- Select Manage next to Messages.
- Find Always allowed to send.
- Select the trash icon beside the relevant chat.
- Confirm Remove.
ChatGPT should then require approval before sending to that chat again.
Use the MESSAGE Test Before ChatGPT Sends a Text
The easiest way to remember what to review is the Designs24hr MESSAGE Test. Run through it whenever an AI-assisted message matters.
Simple rule: reading saves time, drafting saves effort, but sending represents you. Apply stricter review as the action moves from read → draft → send.
What ChatGPT Can and Cannot Do With Apple Messages
| Task | Supported? | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Read supported Messages chats | Yes | Requires the relevant macOS permissions. |
| Search conversations | Yes | Can search iMessage, SMS and RCS chats. |
| Summarize conversations | Yes | Useful for long threads, but verify important details against the original messages. |
| Draft a reply | Yes | You can ask for a draft without instructing ChatGPT to send it. |
| Send through Messages | Yes | Default behavior requires approval unless persistent permission has been granted for that chat. |
| Use from a regular ChatGPT chat | No | Use Codex or ChatGPT Work instead. |
| Use ChatGPT remotely by texting it | No | The plugin does not turn an iMessage conversation into a remote ChatGPT interface. |
| Use directly on ChatGPT web/mobile | No | The Apple Messages capability runs through the supported Mac environment. |
| Current Intel Mac support | No | The current release is included only in the Apple Silicon arm64 build. |
OpenAI describes the Apple Messages integration as running on your Mac. Do not interpret that phrase more broadly than the documentation supports. You are still using an AI service to process information, so treat private conversation content with the same care you would use when connecting any AI tool to a communication account.
Apple Messages Plugin Privacy & Permission Checklist
A Messages history can contain far more than casual conversation. It may reveal contact details, addresses, travel plans, account notifications, family information, work discussions, verification codes or private conversations involving other people.
Before granting access, check:
- Purpose: What exact task are you trying to complete?
- Scope: Does the task require searching Messages at all?
- Sensitivity: Could the relevant chat contain information you would not normally paste into an AI tool?
- Recipient: If sending is involved, have you verified the correct person or group?
- Approval: Are you keeping a human confirmation step before external communication?
- Managed accounts: Does your employer or organization permit this type of AI access?
- Revocation: Do you know how to remove persistent send permission if you enable it?
For a broader review of sensitive data, use the Designs24hr guide to 15 things you should not share with ChatGPT or other AI chatbots.
The same permission logic applies to other communication tools too. Our AI Email Assistant Checklist explains why reading, drafting and sending are three different permission levels and why moving from one to the next deserves a separate decision.
Why the ChatGPT Apple Messages Plugin Is Not Working
1. You Cannot Find the Apple Messages Plugin
Check the basic requirements first:
- You are using the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS.
- Your current installation is the Apple Silicon arm64 build.
- You are looking in the Plugins area.
- Your app is current enough to include the feature.
In a managed workspace, an administrator may also disable Apple Messages through Computer Use controls.
2. The Plugin Is Installed but Does Not Work in Your Chat
Make sure you are using a Codex or ChatGPT Work chat. The Apple Messages capability does not currently work inside a regular ChatGPT conversation.
3. ChatGPT Cannot Read Messages
Check whether you granted the requested macOS permission. If access was denied earlier, review the relevant app/privacy settings instead of repeatedly reinstalling the plugin.
4. ChatGPT Can Draft but Cannot Send
OpenAI documents a current issue involving approval settings. If the task is using Full access or another configuration that disables approval prompts, Apple Messages may be unable to display the confirmation required to send.
Switch the task to Ask for approval or Approve for me, then try the send again.
5. ChatGPT No Longer Asks Before Sending to One Chat
You may previously have selected Always allow sending to this chat.
Go to Settings → Computer use → Manage next to Messages → Always allowed to send, remove that conversation from the list and confirm the change.
6. You Are Trying to Use It From Your iPhone, Browser or CLI
The Apple Messages integration described here runs through the supported ChatGPT desktop setup on your Mac. OpenAI currently says it is not directly available in ChatGPT on the web or mobile, Codex CLI or the IDE extension.
Useful Apple Messages Prompts to Try
Start with low-risk tasks that save time without automatically communicating on your behalf.
Find Plans Hidden in a Long Thread
Search my conversation with [person/group] for the latest confirmed plan about [event or topic]. List the confirmed date, time, location and anything I agreed to bring or do. Flag any detail that was discussed but never confirmed. Do not send a message.
Turn a Conversation Into Action Items
Review the relevant part of my Messages conversation with [person/group]. Create a checklist of action items. For each item, show who appears responsible, any stated deadline and the message context that supports it. If ownership or timing is unclear, label it unclear instead of guessing. Do not send anything.
Draft a Short, Natural Reply
Read the latest messages from [person] that are relevant to their question. Draft a natural reply in 2–4 sentences. Keep it friendly and direct. Do not add facts, commitments or availability that I have not provided. Show me the draft only; do not send it.
Check a Draft Before Sending
Before I send this message, compare it with the relevant conversation context. Check for the wrong recipient, incorrect names, dates, amounts, promises, missing questions and wording that could be misunderstood. Report any issue first. Do not send the message.
When you only want analysis or drafting, say “Do not send anything”. When you do want a send, ask to see the final text and recipient first. Clear boundaries make connected-AI workflows easier to supervise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT work with Apple Messages?
Yes. OpenAI currently provides an Apple Messages plugin in the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS. In ChatGPT Work and Codex, it can read and search supported Messages conversations and can send through the Messages app when the required permissions and approvals are in place.
Can ChatGPT read iMessages?
Yes. OpenAI says the Apple Messages plugin can read and search iMessage, SMS and RCS chats on your Mac when you use the supported setup and grant the requested permissions.
Can ChatGPT send an iMessage for me?
The plugin can send messages through Apple’s Messages app. By default, ChatGPT asks you to approve the message and recipients before sending. You can also grant persistent permission to one chat, but doing so removes the normal per-send approval for future messages to that conversation.
Does the Apple Messages plugin work in a normal ChatGPT conversation?
No. OpenAI’s current documentation says Apple Messages works in Codex and ChatGPT Work rather than ordinary ChatGPT chats.
Does the Apple Messages plugin work on Intel Macs?
Not in the current release documented by OpenAI. The Messages plugin is currently included only in the Apple Silicon arm64 build of the ChatGPT desktop app.
Can I use the Apple Messages plugin from ChatGPT on my iPhone?
Not directly. OpenAI says the Apple Messages capability runs on your Mac and is not directly available in ChatGPT on the web or mobile.
Why can ChatGPT read a message but not send one?
One documented cause is an approval configuration that prevents the required send-confirmation prompt from appearing. OpenAI recommends switching from Full access to Ask for approval or Approve for me and trying again.
Should I select “Always allow sending to this chat”?
For most beginners, keeping per-send approval is the safer default. Persistent permission can save clicks, but it also removes your final approval opportunity for future sends to that conversation.
Final Recommendation
The ChatGPT Apple Messages plugin is most useful when it removes the tedious parts of messaging without removing your judgment. Searching a long conversation, summarizing a thread and preparing a reply can save meaningful time while still leaving the important decisions with you.
Start with read and search, move next to drafting, and treat sending as a higher-permission action. Keep per-send approval enabled unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise, and use the MESSAGE Test whenever the content or recipient matters.
That approach gives you the convenience of AI-assisted messaging without turning convenience into unnecessary automation.
