The official ChatGPT Linux App is now available in public preview, giving supported Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora users a native desktop option for ChatGPT, Work, Codex, projects, local files and browser workflows.
But downloading the first Linux installer you find is not the right first step. You should confirm your exact Linux distribution, version and processor architecture first—and understand that the Linux preview does not yet have complete feature parity with macOS and Windows.
The ChatGPT Linux App currently supports Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44.
OpenAI provides packages for both x64 and ARM64 processors. Ubuntu and Debian use a .deb package, while Fedora uses .rpm.
Important: the ChatGPT Linux App is still a public preview. Other Linux distributions may work, but OpenAI does not formally support them yet. Computer Use is also not currently available on Linux.
Is There an Official ChatGPT Linux App?
Yes. OpenAI now provides an official ChatGPT Linux App in public preview.
This is an important change for Linux users. Previously, the common options were using ChatGPT in a web browser, using command-line tools such as Codex CLI, or installing an unofficial desktop wrapper maintained by a third party.
The official app brings ChatGPT, Work and Codex together in a desktop workspace on supported Linux systems. OpenAI describes the Linux version as suitable for working with projects, local files, browser workflows and Codex alongside ChatGPT.
If the newer desktop workspace is unfamiliar, read our guide to ChatGPT Work to understand how it differs from a normal chat before you start.
Use an official OpenAI download. Search results can still surface older Linux wrappers, unofficial Flatpaks and community packages. An application being called “ChatGPT for Linux” does not automatically mean OpenAI publishes or supports it.
Which Linux Distributions Does the ChatGPT Linux App Support?
OpenAI currently lists five supported desktop versions across Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora.
| Distribution | Supported version | Package | Architectures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu | 24.04 LTS | .deb |
x64 and ARM64 |
| Ubuntu | 26.04 LTS | .deb |
x64 and ARM64 |
| Debian | 13 | .deb |
x64 and ARM64 |
| Fedora | 43 | .rpm |
x64 and ARM64 |
| Fedora | 44 | .rpm |
x64 and ARM64 |
OpenAI notes that other distributions may work, but they are not formally supported during the current preview.
That distinction is worth remembering: “someone got it running” is not the same as “OpenAI officially supports this distribution.”
The Designs24hr LINUX Check Before You Download
Before installing the ChatGPT Linux App, run through these five checks.
Confirm your exact distribution and version before choosing an installer.
Use the package linked from OpenAI rather than a random download mirror.
Decide whether the desktop app offers something you actually need over the web version.
Confirm that the particular desktop capability you expect is available on Linux.
Download the package matching your computer’s processor architecture.
If one of these answers is unclear, resolve it before installing. Many Linux installation problems begin before the installation itself—with the wrong package, unsupported distro or incorrect architecture.
How to Check Your Linux Version and Processor Architecture
You do not need to guess which ChatGPT Linux package your computer needs.
Check your Linux distribution and version
cat /etc/os-release
Look for fields such as NAME, VERSION and VERSION_ID.
For example, if the output identifies Ubuntu and shows VERSION_ID="24.04", you are using one of the currently supported Ubuntu versions.
Check whether your computer is x64 or ARM64
uname -m
| Output | Architecture | Choose |
|---|---|---|
x86_64 |
x64 | x64 / AMD64 package |
aarch64 |
ARM64 | ARM64 package |
arm64 |
ARM64 | ARM64 package |
Which ChatGPT Linux Download Do You Need?
Use this quick decision path before downloading anything.
→ Download the official
.deb package.
→ Download the official
.rpm package.
uname -m returns x86_64?→ Choose x64.
uname -m returns aarch64 or arm64?→ Choose ARM64.
→ Treat it as unsupported unless OpenAI adds it to the official compatibility list.
For the current installer links, use OpenAI’s official ChatGPT Linux documentation .
How to Install the ChatGPT Linux App on Ubuntu
OpenAI currently supports Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.
Download the correct .deb installer for your processor architecture before running the installation command.
cat /etc/os-release and verify that you are on a supported Ubuntu release.
uname -m and determine whether your machine is x64 or ARM64.
chatgpt from Terminal.
Ubuntu x64
cd ~/Downloads sudo apt install ./chatgpt_amd64.deb
Ubuntu ARM64
cd ~/Downloads sudo apt install ./chatgpt_arm64.deb
Filename reminder: package names can change in future releases. If OpenAI changes the filename, use the filename of the package you actually downloaded rather than copying an old command blindly.
How to Install the ChatGPT Linux App on Debian
OpenAI currently officially supports Debian 13.
Debian uses the same .deb installer format as Ubuntu.
cd ~/Downloads sudo apt install ./chatgpt_amd64.deb
ARM64 users should download and install chatgpt_arm64.deb instead.
Once installation is complete, launch the app from the desktop menu or run:
chatgpt
How to Install the ChatGPT Linux App on Fedora
OpenAI currently officially supports Fedora 43 and Fedora 44.
Fedora uses an .rpm package rather than .deb.
Fedora x64
cd ~/Downloads sudo dnf install ./chatgpt.x86_64.rpm
Fedora ARM64
cd ~/Downloads sudo dnf install ./chatgpt.aarch64.rpm
How to Update the ChatGPT Linux App
Installing an official package also configures OpenAI’s signed Linux package repository, allowing later releases to flow through your normal package manager rather than requiring a manual download every time.
Ubuntu and Debian
sudo apt update sudo apt install --only-upgrade chatgpt
Fedora
sudo dnf upgrade --refresh chatgpt
For most beginners, that update path is another reason to prefer the official package over an unofficial desktop wrapper.
What About Linux Mint, Arch, Pop!_OS and Other Linux Distributions?
The important distinction here is between possible compatibility and official support.
| Linux option | Status | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu 24.04 / 26.04 | Officially supported | Use OpenAI’s official .deb. |
| Debian 13 | Officially supported | Use OpenAI’s official .deb. |
| Fedora 43 / 44 | Officially supported | Use OpenAI’s official .rpm. |
| Linux Mint | Not formally supported | Ubuntu compatibility does not automatically equal official support. |
| Pop!_OS | Not formally supported | Treat community success reports separately from OpenAI support. |
| Arch / Manjaro | Not formally supported | Community packages may exist, but OpenAI does not currently provide an official pacman package. |
| openSUSE / NixOS / other distros | Not formally supported | Consider the browser if you want the lowest-risk supported route. |
Do not confuse community packaging with an official OpenAI release. If you consider an unofficial Flatpak, AUR package or wrapper, check who maintains it, what it downloads, what permissions it receives and how updates are delivered.
What Doesn’t Work Yet in the ChatGPT Linux App?
An official Linux application does not mean complete Mac or Windows feature parity yet.
Computer Use is not currently available on Linux
OpenAI currently documents Computer Use for macOS and Windows, but not yet for the Linux preview.
This is important because several newer ChatGPT capabilities depend on Computer Use.
For example, ChatGPT Record & Replay relies on Computer Use and is currently a macOS workflow. Do not assume installing the Linux desktop app makes Record & Replay available.
Browser actions are available
OpenAI says browser actions are available through the Linux app’s built-in browser or Chrome.
That should not be confused with controlling arbitrary Linux desktop applications.
| Capability | Linux preview | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT desktop app | Yes | Available on supported Linux distributions. |
| ChatGPT Work | Yes | Part of the desktop workspace. |
| Codex | Yes | Integrated into the Linux desktop experience. |
| Projects and local files | Yes | Supported in the desktop workspace. |
| Built-in browser / Chrome actions | Yes | Browser workflows are supported. |
| Control other Linux desktop apps | Not yet | OpenAI says other desktop-app control is not currently supported. |
| Computer Use | Not yet | Do not interpret its absence as an installation error. |
| Native Wayland | Experimental | Some desktop behavior can still be rough. |
Does the ChatGPT Linux App Support Wayland?
Yes, but OpenAI currently treats native Wayland support as experimental.
The app can use XWayland where available. If you specifically need to test native Wayland, fully quit ChatGPT and launch:
chatgpt --ozone-platform=wayland
Preview-stage Wayland issues can include behavior involving:
- window positioning
- floating windows
- focus behavior
- keyboard shortcuts
- input-method compatibility on some configurations
If ChatGPT already works normally through XWayland, you do not need to force native Wayland simply because your Linux desktop session uses Wayland.
ChatGPT Linux App vs ChatGPT in Your Browser
The existence of an official desktop app does not make the browser version obsolete.
| Consideration | Linux desktop app | Browser |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Required | No installation required |
| Supported Linux versions | Currently limited | Broader browser-based compatibility |
| Normal ChatGPT conversations | Yes | Yes |
| Desktop Work/Codex environment | Integrated | Different workflow |
| Local desktop workflow | Better integrated | More limited |
| Linux preview bugs | Possible | Generally avoided |
Choose the desktop app if its integrated ChatGPT, Work, Codex, project and local-file workflow is genuinely useful to you.
Stay with the browser if your Linux distribution is unsupported, you do not need the desktop-specific workflow, or you prefer the lowest-friction option.
ChatGPT Linux App vs Codex CLI
The ChatGPT Linux desktop app and Codex CLI serve overlapping but different workflows.
ChatGPT Linux App
A graphical desktop workspace combining ChatGPT, Work, Codex, projects, local files and supported browser workflows.
Codex CLI
A terminal-first Codex experience that fits naturally when your development workflow already happens primarily inside the command line.
If you mainly want a desktop ChatGPT workspace, the app is usually easier. If most of your coding work already happens inside Terminal, a CLI-first workflow may be more natural.
What Should You Do After Installing ChatGPT on Linux?
- Sign in using the ChatGPT account you actually intend to use.
- Check whether you are working in ChatGPT, Work or Codex before starting an important task.
- Test the app with a simple non-sensitive project before giving it access to confidential work.
- Confirm that browser workflows behave correctly on your Linux setup.
- Do not assume Computer Use is missing because the installation failed—it is not currently supported on Linux.
- Keep ChatGPT updated through your normal package manager.
If you plan to connect additional tools or services, see our ChatGPT Plugins guide before granting unnecessary access.
ChatGPT Linux App Not Working? Try These Checks
1. Make sure you downloaded the right package format
- Ubuntu →
.deb - Debian →
.deb - Fedora →
.rpm
2. Check the processor architecture again
uname -m
An x64 installer will not become an ARM64 installer simply because the distro itself is supported.
3. Check the Linux version
Being on Ubuntu, Debian or Fedora alone is not enough. OpenAI currently lists specific versions.
4. Try launching ChatGPT from Terminal
chatgpt
If Terminal reports that the command cannot be found, the package may not have installed correctly.
5. Computer Use is missing
This is currently expected. Computer Use is not yet available in the Linux preview.
6. You have Wayland-related glitches
Native Wayland support remains experimental. If the problem only appears after forcing native Wayland, test the default launch behavior again.
7. Plugins or connected features are missing
Some availability differences can come from your ChatGPT plan, account, region or managed-workspace settings rather than Linux itself.
For that type of problem, use our ChatGPT Plugins Not Showing troubleshooting guide .
8. An older tutorial says no official Linux app exists
That information is now outdated. OpenAI released the official ChatGPT Linux desktop app in public preview in August 2026.
Is the Official ChatGPT Linux App Safer Than an Unofficial Wrapper?
The main advantage is a clearer software trust chain.
When you download through OpenAI’s official documentation and install its package, you know who publishes the application and where future updates are expected to come from.
Be more cautious with:
- unofficial GitHub wrappers
- community Flatpak repositories
- AUR packages
- download mirrors
- repackaged installers
This does not mean every community project is unsafe. It means that you should separately evaluate the maintainer, source, package contents, permissions and update mechanism.
For beginners, “it works” is not enough. When software will have access to your files, projects or development environment, knowing where the application came from matters.
Who Benefits Most From the ChatGPT Linux App?
Developers
Developers can keep ChatGPT, Codex, projects and local-file workflows in a desktop environment while continuing to use terminal tools where appropriate.
Technical professionals
Linux users who previously relied only on browser access now have an official OpenAI desktop option on supported distributions.
Students learning Linux
The official package provides a useful real-world example of Linux package formats, processor architectures and package-manager updates.

Native Wayland support is currently experimental. The app can use XWayland where available, and native Wayland can be tested using chatgpt --ozone-platform=wayland.
How do I update ChatGPT on Linux?
The official installation configures OpenAI’s signed package repository. Ubuntu and Debian users can receive updates through apt, while Fedora users use dnf.
Is the ChatGPT Linux App better than the browser?
It depends on what you need. The browser remains simpler and works across more Linux distributions. The desktop app is more useful if you want the integrated ChatGPT, Work, Codex, project and local-file desktop workflow.
Bottom Line
The ChatGPT Linux App finally gives supported Linux users an official OpenAI desktop option instead of making the browser or an unofficial wrapper the only practical routes.
Installation is straightforward once you answer three questions:
- Is your exact Linux distribution and version officially supported?
-
Do you need a
.debor.rpminstaller? - Is your computer x64 or ARM64?
From there, install the appropriate official package and use your normal Linux package manager for future updates.
The main caveat is feature maturity. The app remains a preview, native Wayland support is still experimental, and Linux does not yet have full desktop-control capability.
That is why the best approach is not simply “install it because it exists.” Use the LINUX Check, confirm your system and expectations first, and choose the desktop app only when it offers a real improvement over using ChatGPT in your browser.
