Claude Memory: How to See, Edit, Delete & Turn It Off

Claude can remember useful details across chats. Learn how to see, edit, delete, pause or reset Claude memory, stop past-chat search, and use Incognito chats.

Last checked: August 30, 2026

Claude memory can carry useful context from one conversation to the next, but you are not stuck with whatever Claude remembers. You can now see individual memories by topic, edit incorrect details, delete specific items, pause memory temporarily, reset it completely, and keep one-off conversations out of memory with Incognito chats.

The controls sound similar, but they do very different things. Most importantly, deleting an old Claude conversation does not automatically delete memory entries that were generated from that conversation. If your goal is to remove something Claude remembers, check the memory itself.

Quick answer

Open Claude → Settings → Memory to see what Claude remembers under Topics. Edit or delete individual memories there. Use Pause memory when you want a temporary break without deleting what is already saved. Use Reset memory only when you want to permanently erase all Claude memories, including project memories.

Temporary migration note: relevant through September 9, 2026

Anthropic says users who think something disappeared during the move from its legacy memory system can export their old memory from Settings → Memory until September 9, 2026. If that applies to you, export it before the deadline and review it before adding anything back.

What Is Claude Memory?

Claude memory is a personalization feature that lets Claude build useful context from your conversations and use that context later. Instead of treating every new conversation as a completely blank start, Claude can retain individual pieces of information that may help with future work.

Anthropic’s current system saves memory as individual topics. That means a remembered work preference, project detail, communication style, or recurring context can appear as its own editable memory instead of being buried inside one large summary.

Memory

Saved context

Claude can retain useful facts or preferences and apply them in later conversations.

Past-chat search

Retrieves old conversations

Claude can separately search previous chats when that feature is available and enabled.

Chat history

Your saved conversations

Your visible conversation history is not the same thing as Claude’s generated memory entries.

Incognito

One-off conversation

An Incognito chat does not use Claude’s existing memory and is not added to future memory.

That separation matters. You might keep your chat history but turn memory off. You might leave memory on but disable past-chat search. Or you might use Incognito for a single conversation without changing your normal memory setup.

As of August 30, 2026, Anthropic says memory is on by default for Free, Pro, and Max plans. It is off by default for Team and Enterprise organizations and can depend on organization-level controls. Past-chat search is a separate feature available on paid plans.

Claude Memory Control Map: Which Setting Should You Use?

The easiest way to manage Claude memory is to start with your goal rather than the name of a setting.

What you want Use this control What happens
See what Claude knows Settings → Memory → Topics Shows individual memory entries Claude currently has.
Correct something inaccurate Edit Changes that saved memory without clearing everything else.
Remove one remembered detail Delete memory Removes that individual memory entry.
Temporarily stop memory Pause memory Keeps existing memories but stops Claude from using them or creating new ones while paused.
Erase all Claude memories Reset memory Permanently deletes all saved memories, including project memories.
Stop Claude searching older conversations Search and reference chats → Off Disables past-chat retrieval without necessarily deleting saved memory.
Keep one new conversation outside memory Incognito chat The chat does not use existing Claude memory and is not added to future memory.
Remove a conversation from chat history Delete the conversation Deletes the chat, but related generated memory entries can remain.

How to See What Claude Remembers About You

You do not have to guess what Claude has stored. Anthropic now exposes saved memories under Topics in the Memory settings.

Open Claude Settings

Open your Claude account and go to Settings.

Open Memory

Select the Memory section. This is where Claude’s memory and past-chat search controls are managed.

Review Topics

Look through the individual topics Claude currently remembers about you.

Open anything that looks wrong or outdated

Pay particular attention to old roles, completed projects, changed preferences, outdated deadlines, or assumptions that no longer help.

Optional memory-audit prompt

Summarize the useful context you currently remember about me by topic. Flag anything that may be outdated, uncertain, or contradictory. Do not invent missing details.

Important: treat Claude’s answer as a convenient review aid, not as a substitute for the actual memory controls. Verify important items in Settings → Memory → Topics.

How to Edit Claude Memory

If Claude has remembered something useful but got a detail wrong, editing is usually better than deleting everything.

Open Settings → Memory

Go to the list of Topics Claude currently remembers.

Select the relevant topic

Open the entry containing the information you want to correct.

Choose the edit control

Update the remembered information so it reflects your current situation.

Check the result

Confirm that the topic now says what you intended rather than relying on your next chat as proof.

Anthropic also says you can tell Claude directly in a conversation what you want it to remember, change, or forget. For anything important, it is still worth checking the Memory settings afterward.

Example correction prompt

Update your memory: [old information] is no longer correct. The current information is: [new information]. Tell me what you changed, and I will verify it in Memory settings.

How to Delete One Claude Memory

If you want to remove a specific remembered detail without clearing everything, delete the individual memory entry.

Open Settings → Memory

Find the Topics section.

Open the relevant topic

Select the memory you want to remove.

Select Delete

Remove that specific item instead of resetting your complete memory.

Verify that it disappeared

Check the Topics list so you know you removed the memory entry rather than only deleting a conversation that mentioned it.

Example forget prompt

Forget this information: [information to remove]. Tell me whether you updated saved memory, then I will verify the change in Settings → Memory.

Does Deleting a Claude Chat Delete Its Memory?

No—not automatically.

Anthropic says that when a conversation expires or is deleted, memory entries generated from that conversation are not automatically removed. You can delete those individual memories separately.

This is one of the most important distinctions in Claude memory management.

Imagine that an old conversation told Claude you were working on Project A. Claude later created a memory entry from that information. Deleting the original Project A conversation may remove the chat from your history, but you should not assume it also erased the separately generated memory.

If your real goal is “Claude should stop remembering this”, open Settings → Memory → Topics and look for the relevant memory entry.

If you are removing old information
  • Delete the conversation if you no longer want the chat in your history.
  • Check Topics for any memory generated from that conversation.
  • Delete the individual memory if you no longer want Claude to retain it.
  • Start a fresh chat and verify that your workflow now uses the correct context.

This is also why memory problems can sometimes look like ordinary context problems. If an AI assistant seems to ignore or lose earlier instructions within a conversation, our guide to why AI forgets instructions and earlier messages explains the difference between long-term memory and limited conversation context.

How to Turn Claude Memory Off

Go to Settings → Memory and find Generate memory from chats. When you disable it, Claude currently offers two materially different choices: Pause memory and Reset memory.

Do not choose Reset simply because you want Claude to stop remembering temporarily. Reset is the destructive option.

Pause Memory

Pause keeps your existing memories but stops Claude from using memory or creating new memories while it is paused.

Best for: taking a temporary break from memory without throwing away useful context you may want again later.

Anthropic also says conversations created while memory is paused are not added to memory later when you turn memory back on.

Reset Memory

Reset permanently deletes Claude’s saved memories, including project memories. Anthropic warns that this action cannot be undone.

Use Reset only when your goal is to start over. If one memory is wrong, edit or delete that item instead.

Pause vs Reset vs Delete vs Incognito: Which Should You Use?

Control Keeps existing memory? Can you reverse it? Best use
Edit Yes You can edit again Correct one outdated or inaccurate detail
Delete memory Other memories remain The deleted item is removed Remove one remembered detail
Pause Yes Yes Temporarily stop memory use and new memory creation
Reset No No Completely start over
Incognito chat Your normal memory remains unchanged Not applicable Keep one new conversation outside ongoing memory

A simple rule is:

Decision shortcut

Wrong detail? Edit it. One memory you do not want? Delete it. Need a temporary break? Pause. Want to erase everything? Reset. Need one isolated chat? Use Incognito.

How to Stop Claude From Searching Your Old Chats

Claude’s ability to search previous conversations is separate from generated memory. This matters because turning one feature off does not mean you should assume every other source of context is also disabled.

Anthropic says past-chat search is available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. When available on your account, Claude can search relevant previous conversations when you ask questions such as “What did we discuss about that project?”

To stop this behavior:

Open Settings

Go to Claude’s account settings.

Open Memory

Find the controls for both generated memory and past-chat search.

Turn off Search and reference chats

This stops Claude from searching previous conversations through that feature.

Turning off past-chat search is not the same as deleting your chats, and it is not the same as resetting generated memory. Think of these as separate switches for separate behaviors.

How Claude Incognito Chats Work

Incognito is useful when you want one temporary conversation without changing the memory settings you normally use.

Anthropic says Incognito chats are available to Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users. When you start one, Claude does not use its existing memory in that conversation, and information from the Incognito chat is not added to future memory.

Start a new chat outside a Project

Incognito mode is currently available for conversations outside Projects.

Select the ghost icon

Anthropic places the Incognito control in the upper-right area when starting an eligible new chat.

Confirm Incognito mode

The interface identifies the conversation as an Incognito chat.

Close it when finished

Once an Incognito conversation is closed, Anthropic says it cannot be reopened or converted into a normal saved chat.

Incognito does not mean instant deletion

Anthropic says Incognito chats are not stored in your visible chat history or Claude memory, but they are retained for 30 days by default. Team and Enterprise retention can also follow organization-specific policies. So use “Incognito” to describe how the conversation interacts with history and memory—not as a claim that no copy exists anywhere.

How Claude Memory Works With Projects and Cowork

Claude Projects

Anthropic says each Claude Project has its own separate memory space and project summary. That helps keep project-specific context focused instead of mixing everything into one undifferentiated memory pool.

This does not make a Project a deletion tool. If you want to remove a remembered item, manage the memory itself.

Claude Cowork

Claude’s broader memory can now carry between ordinary Claude Chat and Claude Cowork when Cowork runs in the cloud. Context learned in chat can therefore help with a cloud Cowork task, and useful Cowork context can carry back to chat.

Anthropic specifically notes that this shared-memory behavior does not apply to Cowork sessions that run locally on your computer.

If you are moving useful context from another assistant into Claude rather than managing information already there, see our guide to transferring ChatGPT memory to Claude. It explains what can move, what does not transfer automatically, and what you should verify afterward.

The Designs24hr 5-Minute Claude Memory Audit

You do not need to reset Claude every time something feels wrong. A short audit is usually more precise.

5-minute Claude memory checklist
  • Open Settings → Memory → Topics.
  • Scan for outdated roles, projects, deadlines, preferences, or assumptions.
  • Edit useful memories that are merely inaccurate.
  • Delete individual memories you no longer want Claude to retain.
  • Decide whether normal memory should remain on, be paused, or be reset.
  • Review Search and reference chats separately.
  • Use Incognito when you want one new conversation kept outside ongoing memory.

For most people, the goal should not be “maximum memory” or “zero memory.” The better setup is the one that preserves genuinely useful continuity while making outdated or unwanted context easy to spot and remove.

Common Claude Memory Mistakes

Mistake 1

Deleting a chat and assuming the memory disappeared

Check Topics separately. Anthropic says generated memories can remain after the source conversation is deleted.

Mistake 2

Resetting everything to fix one bad detail

Edit or delete the individual memory instead of destroying useful context.

Mistake 3

Confusing memory with past-chat search

They are separate features with separate controls.

Mistake 4

Assuming Incognito means zero retention

Incognito stays out of normal history and memory, but Anthropic says the conversation is retained for 30 days by default.

Claude Memory FAQs

Does Claude remember previous conversations?

Claude can generate memories from your chats and use that saved context in later conversations when memory is enabled. On supported paid plans, Claude can also separately search past chats.

How do I see what Claude remembers about me?

Open Settings → Memory. Anthropic lists Claude’s current memories under Topics, where you can inspect individual entries.

How do I delete Claude memory?

For one item, open the relevant Topic and delete that individual memory. If you want to permanently delete all saved Claude memories, including project memories, use Reset memory.

Does deleting a Claude conversation delete its memory?

No, not automatically. Anthropic says memory entries generated from a conversation can remain after that conversation expires or is deleted. Remove the individual memory separately if you no longer want it saved.

Can I temporarily turn Claude memory off without deleting it?

Yes. Choose Pause memory. Existing memories remain, but Claude stops using memory and stops creating new memories while it is paused.

What is the difference between Pause and Reset memory?

Pause preserves your existing memories and can be reversed. Reset permanently deletes all memories, including project memories, and Anthropic says it cannot be undone.

Does Claude use memory in an Incognito chat?

No. Anthropic says an Incognito chat does not use Claude’s existing memory and is not incorporated into future memory entries.

Are Claude Incognito chats deleted immediately?

No. They are not stored in your normal chat history or memory, but Anthropic says they are retained for 30 days by default. Enterprise retention can be longer according to organization settings.

Can Claude search old chats if memory is off?

Memory and past-chat search are separate controls. Check Search and reference chats in Settings → Memory if your goal is specifically to stop Claude from searching previous conversations.

Does Claude have separate memory for Projects?

Yes. Anthropic says each Project has its own separate memory space and project summary so its context stays focused on that Project.

Save this for later

The Claude Memory Rule Worth Remembering

Delete the chat if you want the conversation gone. Delete the memory if you want Claude to stop remembering the information.

If you know someone who regularly uses Claude, send them this guide—especially if they assume deleting an old conversation automatically clears everything Claude learned from it.

Bottom Line

Claude memory is easier to control once you separate the different jobs each setting performs. Topics show what Claude remembers. Edit fixes a memory. Delete removes one. Pause temporarily stops memory without clearing it. Reset permanently starts over. Search and reference chats controls past-chat retrieval, while Incognito keeps a new conversation outside your normal memory workflow.

The most important habit is simple: if information should no longer be remembered, check the memory entry itself rather than assuming deleting the original conversation handled it.
