Everyday AI Guides · AI Safety, Privacy & Trust

Want to delete Gemini chats without tapping through them one at a time? Google gives you a few ways to do it: delete a single chat from your Recent list, delete a whole day or a custom date range, or wipe all of your Gemini history at once. This guide shows each method on a computer, Android and iPhone, explains what deleting actually removes (and what stays saved somewhere else), and shows how to stop new chats from piling up. Every step comes from Google’s own Gemini Apps Help pages, linked so you can check them.

Quick answer

To delete all your Gemini chats at once, Google’s Gemini Apps Help says:

  1. On a computer, go to gemini.google.com and click Settings & help > Activity (or open myactivity.google.com/product/gemini).
  2. In the Gemini mobile app, tap Menu > your profile picture or initial > Gemini Apps Activity.
  3. Above your activity, choose Delete > All time. You can also pick Last hour, Last day or Custom range.

Deleting a chat from your Recent list also deletes it from Gemini Apps Activity, and deleting activity removes it from your Recent and pinned chats. Work and school accounts can’t delete chats; your administrator controls that.

Before you delete Gemini chats: 3 things to know

A few rules from Google’s help pages decide which method works for you and what happens afterward:

  • Recent chats and Gemini Apps Activity are linked. Google says removing a chat from your pinned and recent list also removes it from Gemini Apps Activity, together with things you made in it, such as Canvas docs and apps. The reverse is true too: once activity is deleted, it won’t appear in Recent or pinned chats (Find & manage your recent chats).
  • You need a personal Google Account with Keep Activity on to manage chats. Google notes that the Recent chats features (pin, rename, delete) are only available with Keep Activity turned on when you use a personal account.
  • Work and school accounts are different. If you use Gemini with a work or school account, your Google Workspace administrator controls Gemini Apps Activity and you can’t delete chats yourself (Use Gemini Apps with a work or school Google Account).

If you have pinned chats you want to keep, read the pinned-chats note below before you use All time.

Which way to delete Gemini chats should you use?

Pick the method that matches how much you want to remove. This table pulls together the options Google documents:

How to delete all Gemini chats at once

The fastest way to delete Gemini chats in bulk is the All time option in Gemini Apps Activity. It removes all of your Gemini Apps activity in one go, so your Recent and pinned chats disappear with it.

On a computer

  1. Go to gemini.google.com and sign in.
  2. Click Settings & help, then Activity. You can also go straight to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini.
  3. Above your activity, click Delete.
  4. Choose All time and follow the on-screen prompts to confirm.

On Android

  1. Open the Gemini mobile app.
  2. At the left, tap Menu, then your profile picture or initial, then Gemini Apps Activity.
  3. Above your activity, tap Delete, then All time.

Using a browser on your Android phone instead? Go to gemini.google.com, tap Menu > Settings & help > Activity, then tap Delete > All time (Android steps).

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the Gemini mobile app.
  2. At the left, tap Menu, then your profile picture or initial, then Gemini Apps Activity.
  3. Above your activity, tap Delete, then All time.

The browser route on an iPhone or iPad is the same as on Android: Menu > Settings & help > Activity at gemini.google.com (iPhone & iPad steps).

Deleting all chats except pinned ones

Google’s help pages don’t describe a “delete all except pinned” option. Google says that once data in Gemini Apps Activity is deleted, it won’t appear in your Recent or pinned chats, so All time takes your pinned chats too. If a pinned chat has something you need, copy it somewhere safe first, or delete the other chats one at a time or by date instead.

How to delete multiple Gemini chats by date

If you only want to clear part of your history, Gemini Apps Activity has four smaller delete options. Open Gemini Apps Activity using the steps above, then:

  • Last hour or last day: above your activity, choose Delete > Last hour or Delete > Last day. Handy if you just shared something you’d rather not keep.
  • A custom range: choose Delete > Custom range and pick the start and end dates.
  • One day: next to a day’s heading, choose Delete all activity from [day].
  • One item: next to a single prompt, choose Delete activity item.

Google’s Recent chats help page documents deleting one chat at a time and doesn’t describe a way to select several chats in that list and delete them together. To delete multiple Gemini chats in one action, the date-based options in Gemini Apps Activity are the documented way to do it.

How to delete one Gemini chat

To delete Gemini chats one by one, use the Recent list in the side panel (Google’s steps):

  • Computer: if your chats are hidden, click Menu at the top. In the side panel, hover over the chat, click More, then Delete.
  • Gemini mobile app (Android or iPhone): tap Menu at the top. Under “Recent,” touch and hold the chat, then tap Delete.
  • Gemini in a phone browser: tap Menu, tap the chat under “Recent,” then tap More > Delete at the top.

One detail worth knowing if you use branches: Google says deleting a branched chat doesn’t delete the original chat, and deleting the original doesn’t delete a branched chat. Delete each one separately.

What happens when you delete Gemini chats?

Deleting removes more than the chat text in some cases and less than you might expect in others. Here’s what Google’s help pages say, in one place:

ItemDeleted with the chat? What Google says
The chat in Recent and pinned chatsYesDeleting from Recent also deletes it from Gemini Apps Activity, and deleted activity no longer appears in Recent or pinned chats.
Canvas docs and apps made in that chatYesRemoving a chat from Recent also removes what was made in it, such as Canvas docs and apps.
Gemini Live audio, transcripts, video and screensharesYesDeleting the activity for a Gemini Live chat also deletes its related audio, transcript, videos and screenshares.
Your GemsNoDeleting a conversation with a Gem doesn’t delete the Gem itself.
Public links to shared chatsCheck it yourselfGoogle’s pages differ (see the note below). Delete the link in Your public links to be sure.
Chats already reviewed by human reviewersNoReviewed chats are kept separately, disconnected from your account, for up to three years.
Data in other Google servicesNoDeleting Gemini Apps activity doesn’t delete data saved in other services you used with Gemini, such as Wallet or YouTube. Settings like Web & App Activity are separate.
Instructions you asked Gemini to saveNoGoogle says your instructions (“Saved info” in some regions) stay saved until you delete them.

Is it gone right away?

Google says that when you delete Gemini activity, it starts removing it right away. Its first goal is to hide the activity from view right away; after that, it works to fully and safely erase the data from its storage. Some data, such as how often you use Gemini Apps, stays until you delete your Google Account, and keeps some data longer for security, fraud prevention, legal or financial record-keeping reasons (Gemini Apps Privacy Hub).

Shared chats: two Google pages disagree

The activity help page says that if a shared chat is deleted, the related public link is not deleted. The sharing help page says a public link stays up only as long as the chat is saved in Gemini Apps Activity, and is deleted if any part of the chat is deleted. Because the two pages differ, the safe move is to delete links yourself: on a computer, go to gemini.google.com, click Settings & help > Your public links, then click Delete public link next to each one, or Delete all links (Share your chats from Gemini Apps).

Deleting a link doesn’t remove posts where you shared it on other sites, and it doesn’t delete copies of the chat that other people continued in their own Gemini.

Do you need to delete Gemini memory too?

People often search for how to delete all Gemini chats and memory together. That’s because Gemini can personalize answers using your past chats when the Memory setting is on. Google’s help page on memory of your past chats says:

  • To delete something Gemini remembered about you, delete all chats that contain that information from Gemini Apps Activity.
  • Google warns that Gemini may keep using a deleted chat for personalization for a short time before it stops.
  • If the information came from a connected app, delete the chats and disconnect that app, so Gemini doesn’t pick it up again.
  • To stop Gemini using past chats at all, open the Gemini app, tap Menu > your profile picture or initial > Personal Intelligence, and turn Memory off.

Instructions you’ve asked Gemini to save are separate from chats, so deleting chats doesn’t erase them. The Privacy Hub says they remain saved until you delete them. For a deeper look at connected apps and what disconnecting does, see our guide to Gemini connected apps and privacy.

How to stop Gemini from saving chats

If you’d rather not have to delete Gemini chats again later, you have three documented options.

1. Turn off Keep Activity

Google says Keep Activity is on by default if you’re 18 or over. To turn it off, open Gemini Apps Activity (steps above), then near the top choose On > Turn off, or Turn off and delete activity to clear your history in the same step.

Know the trade-offs first. Even with Keep Activity off, Google says your conversations are saved with your account for up to 72 hours so it can provide the service and process any feedback, and that activity won’t show in Gemini Apps Activity. With it off, chats you have with Gems aren’t saved (the Gems themselves are), and only some connected apps stay available: Google lists Device assistance, Gemini Notebook, Messages, Phone and WhatsApp. The Recent chats features also need Keep Activity on for personal accounts.

2. Set auto-delete

By default, Gemini Apps activity older than 18 months is deleted automatically. You can change that to 3 or 36 months, or turn auto-delete off. In Gemini Apps Activity, choose Deleting activity older than … months (or Choose an auto-delete option) near the top, pick a period, then follow the on-screen steps. A 3-month setting is a middle ground if you want Recent chats to work but don’t want years of history.

3. Use a temporary chat

For a one-off question you don’t want saved, start a temporary chat. Google says it won’t appear in your Gemini Apps Activity or your Recent chats. On a computer, go to gemini.google.com and click Temporary chat next to New chat. It needs a personal Google Account and isn’t available in Gemini in Chrome or Gemini in Google Messages. In a temporary chat you can’t use Gems or connected apps, get personalized responses or give feedback. Like chats with Keep Activity off, temporary chats are kept with your account for 72 hours, according to the Privacy Hub.

The account-on-another-device row is our reading of how account-based history works rather than a line from Google’s pages. If something you deleted keeps coming back in Google Search’s AI Mode rather than in Gemini, that’s a different history. Our guide to Google AI Mode history that keeps coming back covers it.

Quick checklist: clear your Gemini history fully

  1. Copy anything you want to keep from your chats, including pinned ones.
  2. Delete your chats: Gemini Apps Activity > Delete > All time.
  3. Delete public links: Settings & help > Your public links > Delete all links.
  4. Review instructions you’ve asked Gemini to save and delete any you don’t want.
  5. Decide what’s next: turn off Keep Activity, set auto-delete to 3 months, or use temporary chats for private questions.
