If Gmail AI Inbox is missing even though you expected to have it, the problem may not be your Gmail app. Access currently depends on your account, Google AI plan, country, language and Smart Features settings. And if AI Inbox is already visible but empty, that is a different problem with a different set of checks.
Gmail AI Inbox not showing? Check your account and plan first. Google currently lists AI Inbox for personal Google Accounts with Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra, in English and in the United States. You also need the required Smart Features enabled. On a computer, eligible users can check Settings → See all settings → Inbox → Show AI Inbox. If you just enabled Smart Features, Google says the first to-dos and topics can take a few hours and may take up to seven days to appear.
Why Is Gmail AI Inbox Not Showing?
The important distinction is that “AI Inbox is missing” does not automatically mean “Gmail is broken.” Google currently restricts AI Inbox by eligibility, and the feature is still described as beta.
A missing AI Inbox can therefore come from several different places: the Google Account you are using, your Google AI plan, your country or language, Smart Features settings, a work or school administrator, or simply the fact that the feature is not available to that account under Google’s current requirements.
Account
Are you signed into the Google Account that actually has the eligible plan?
Eligibility
Does your account meet Google’s current plan, country and language requirements?
Smart Features
Are the relevant Gmail, Workspace and Google-product Smart Features controls enabled?
State
Is AI Inbox missing completely, or is the feature visible but empty?
Do not troubleshoot all four problems as if they were the same. If the AI Inbox setting itself does not exist, start with eligibility. If the feature is already visible but contains no to-dos or topics, skip ahead to the empty-inbox checks.
1. Check Whether Your Account Is Eligible for Gmail AI Inbox
Start here before reinstalling Gmail, changing browser settings or repeatedly refreshing the page. If the account does not meet Google’s current requirements, those actions will not create access.
Personal Google Accounts
Google currently lists AI Inbox for personal accounts with one of these paid Google AI plans:
- Google AI Plus
- Google AI Pro
- Google AI Ultra
Google’s current Gmail Help documentation lists the feature as English and U.S. only for those personal Google AI plans. The platforms currently listed are web, iOS and Android.
| Eligibility check | Current personal-account requirement | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI plan | Plus, Pro or Ultra | Confirm the plan belongs to the account currently open in Gmail. |
| Country | United States | If you are outside the supported region, changing unrelated Gmail settings will not solve eligibility. |
| Language | English | Check the language used by the eligible account and Gmail experience. |
| Platforms | Web, iOS, Android | You can use a supported platform, but the account itself still needs to qualify. |
| Smart Features | Required | Review the Smart Features controls before expecting AI Inbox content. |
Work or School Accounts
Do not assume that having Gemini somewhere in a work or school account automatically gives you AI Inbox. Google’s current AI Inbox Help page lists a separate Workspace requirement and says administrator-controlled access to the required Gemini preview is involved.
That means an employee or student may be unable to enable AI Inbox personally even when other Gemini features are available. Your organization’s subscription and administrator settings can determine whether the feature appears.
Best troubleshooting rule: separate personal Gmail eligibility from work or school eligibility. They are not interchangeable, and Google may change Workspace preview labels or requirements while AI Inbox remains in beta.
2. Make Sure You Are Using the Right Google Account
This sounds simple, but it matters when you use several Google Accounts in the same browser or Gmail app.
For example, your personal account may have Google AI Pro while Gmail is currently displaying a second account without that subscription. In that case, checking settings in the wrong inbox can make it look as though AI Inbox is missing from an eligible account.
Check the account shown in Gmail
Confirm the email address of the account you are actively viewing.
Confirm which account owns the Google AI plan
The subscription needs to apply to the account for which you are checking AI Inbox eligibility.
Switch accounts before troubleshooting settings
If necessary, switch to the eligible account and then review Gmail’s AI Inbox and Smart Features options again.
Google also specifically recommends confirming that you are in the correct Google Account when AI Inbox information appears outdated.
3. Turn On the Smart Features AI Inbox Needs
AI Inbox is not just controlled by the visible “Show AI Inbox” checkbox. Google’s documentation also requires relevant Smart Features settings to be enabled.
Google separates smart-feature controls because different settings govern personalization inside Gmail, Chat and Meet and broader smart experiences across Google Workspace and other Google products. The wording you see can vary as Google updates account controls, so use the descriptions in your own settings rather than assuming every account will show an identical screen.
Why Smart Features matter
Smart Features allow supported Google services to use content and activity to provide personalized experiences. Gmail features such as categorization and other intelligent inbox experiences can depend on these controls.
If you do not want to enable a particular data-personalization setting, review Google’s explanation before turning it on merely to access AI Inbox. A feature being useful does not mean you must accept a setting you are uncomfortable with.
For the latest wording and control locations, use Google’s official Smart Features help page.
4. Enable “Show AI Inbox” in Gmail
Once your account meets the current requirements and the required Smart Features are enabled, check whether Gmail gives you the AI Inbox visibility setting.
On a computer, Google’s current instructions are:
- Open Gmail.
- Select Settings in the upper-right area.
- Select See all settings.
- Open the Inbox section.
- Find Show AI Inbox.
- Check the box to show AI Inbox.
If “Show AI Inbox” is available: that is a good sign that Gmail recognizes the feature for your account. Enable it, then give Gmail time to prepare the first set of suggested items if needed.
If “Show AI Inbox” is missing entirely: go back to eligibility, account selection, Smart Features and—for work or school accounts—administrator-controlled access. Do not assume an absent checkbox can be fixed by repeatedly refreshing Gmail.
5. If You Just Enabled Smart Features, You May Need to Wait
This is one of the easiest troubleshooting details to miss.
Google says that after the required Smart Features are turned on, it can take a few hours for AI Inbox content to begin appearing. Google also warns that it may take up to seven days for your first set of suggested to-dos and topics.
So “I enabled everything five minutes ago and AI Inbox is empty” is not necessarily an error. If your settings and eligibility are correct, immediate repeated troubleshooting may accomplish nothing. Give the system time to initialize.
This does not mean every missing AI Inbox should be ignored for seven days. The distinction is:
- No AI Inbox setting at all: check access and eligibility first.
- AI Inbox exists but has no initial content after enabling Smart Features: initialization time may be relevant.
6. AI Inbox Is Showing but Empty? Check These Things
A visible but empty AI Inbox is different from a missing AI Inbox.
Google says AI Inbox may be empty if you have not sent or received email recently. It also only considers certain messages when deciding what to surface.
First, refresh AI Inbox
Open AI Inbox and use its Refresh control to ask Gmail for the latest updates.
Check for recent email activity
AI Inbox is designed to identify priority to-dos and topics from your email activity. If the account has little recent activity, an empty view may simply mean Gmail does not currently have suitable items to surface.
Make sure you are still in the correct account
If you use several Gmail accounts, confirm that you have not switched into a quieter inbox or an account that does not contain the messages you expected AI Inbox to use.
Give new Smart Features settings time
If you have just enabled the required settings, remember Google’s few-hours-to-seven-days initialization guidance before treating the empty state as a permanent failure.
7. Understand Which Emails AI Inbox Can Actually Use
AI Inbox does not simply turn every message in Gmail into an AI task.
Google’s current documentation says AI Inbox surfaces information from messages in the Primary tab rather than other categories such as Social or Promotions.
Google also says AI Inbox filters out messages that you:
- archive;
- delete;
- mute;
- snooze;
- or that Gmail treats as spam.
Google currently lists these as unsupported as well:
- attachments;
- delegated inboxes;
- encrypted email.
Why this matters: an email can exist in Gmail and still not be a candidate for AI Inbox. Before deciding the feature is broken because one message is missing, check where that message lives and whether it falls into one of Google’s documented exclusions.
Gmail AI Inbox Missing vs Empty: Quick Diagnosis
| What you see | What to check first | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| No AI Inbox option anywhere | Plan, country, language, account type, Smart Features or administrator access | Verify current eligibility before changing unrelated settings. |
| “Show AI Inbox” exists but is off | Inbox setting | Enable it and reopen AI Inbox. |
| AI Inbox appears but is empty | Recent email activity, initialization and message eligibility | Refresh it, verify recent activity and allow setup time. |
| You just enabled Smart Features | Initialization time | Wait if appropriate — Google says first items may take up to 7 days. |
| One important email is missing | Primary tab, archive/snooze/mute state or unsupported message type | Check the original message rather than assuming AI Inbox indexes everything. |
| Work or school account lacks the feature | Workspace eligibility and administrator-controlled preview access | Check with the organization’s administrator. |
| AI Inbox looks outdated | Internet connection and active Google Account | Refresh, check connectivity and confirm the account. |
Use the CHECK → ENABLE → WAIT → VERIFY Method
Instead of trying random fixes, use this four-step workflow whenever Gmail AI Inbox is not showing or seems incomplete.
Confirm the account, plan, U.S. availability, English language and work/school requirements.
Review required Smart Features and turn on Show AI Inbox when that option is available.
If settings were just enabled, allow the documented initialization period instead of repeatedly changing things.
Check recent activity, the Primary tab and message eligibility when specific items do not appear.
The key troubleshooting question
Do not ask only, “Why isn’t AI Inbox working?” Ask which layer is failing: eligibility, enablement, initialization or message selection? Once you know that, the next step becomes much clearer.
AI Inbox vs Gmail Live vs AI Overview in Gmail Search
Google’s growing list of Gmail AI features makes the names easy to mix up. AI Inbox, Gmail Live and AI Overview in Gmail Search solve different jobs.
AI Inbox
Best for: seeing suggested priorities, to-dos and topics that may deserve your attention.
Gmail Live
Best for: speaking naturally to Gmail to find and ask questions about information in your inbox.
AI Overview in Search
Best for: typing a natural-language Gmail search and getting a generated answer or summary above the results.
The easiest way to choose is to start with your actual problem:
- “What needs my attention?” → AI Inbox
- “I want to ask my inbox by voice.” → Gmail Live
- “I want to type a question and find an answer from my email.” → AI Overview in Gmail Search

What to Do If Gmail AI Inbox Still Does Not Appear
If you have gone through the checks above and the AI Inbox setting still does not appear, use a narrow troubleshooting process rather than making unrelated changes.
Recheck Google’s current eligibility page
AI Inbox is beta, so requirements can change after this guide is published. Compare your account against Google’s current Gemini features in Gmail availability page.
Check the dedicated AI Inbox instructions
Google’s AI Inbox help page is the best source for current account requirements, Smart Features rules and feature behavior.
For work or school accounts, ask the administrator
If your organization controls preview access, you may not have the ability to enable the required feature yourself.
Avoid “fixes” that do not address the cause
Repeatedly reinstalling an app, clearing unrelated settings or refreshing Gmail cannot make an ineligible account eligible. Match the fix to the missing layer: account, eligibility, Smart Features, administrator access, initialization or message selection.
One useful fallback: AI Inbox is only one Gmail AI workflow. If your actual goal is finding a buried email rather than automatically surfacing priorities, an eligible account may have another Gmail search or voice feature that better fits the task.
Gmail AI Inbox Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Gmail AI Inbox not showing?
Common areas to check include your Google Account, eligible Google AI plan, country, language, Smart Features settings and account type. Work or school accounts can also depend on Workspace eligibility and administrator-controlled access. Google currently describes AI Inbox as beta, so availability and requirements may change.
How do I enable AI Inbox in Gmail?
On a computer, Google currently instructs eligible users to open Gmail, go to Settings → See all settings → Inbox, and check Show AI Inbox. The required Smart Features also need to be enabled.
Do I need Google AI Pro for Gmail AI Inbox?
Not necessarily. Google’s current Gmail availability page lists Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra as eligible personal-account plans for AI Inbox, subject to the feature’s current U.S. and English requirements.
Why is my Gmail AI Inbox empty?
Google says AI Inbox may be empty if you have not sent or received email recently. If Smart Features were only just enabled, initial to-dos and topics can also take time to appear. In addition, AI Inbox does not use every message in Gmail.
How long does Gmail AI Inbox take to appear after enabling Smart Features?
Google says it can take a few hours after Smart Features are enabled and may take up to seven days for the first set of to-dos and topics to appear.
Does Gmail AI Inbox work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, for eligible users. Google’s current Gmail feature availability page lists AI Inbox on web, iOS and Android. Account, plan, country and language requirements still apply.
Can I use Gmail AI Inbox with a work or school account?
Google documents a separate Workspace path for work and school accounts. Current access depends on the required Workspace plan and administrator-controlled access to Google’s relevant Gemini preview. Check your organization’s settings and Google’s latest AI Inbox documentation rather than assuming personal-account rules apply.
Does Gmail AI Inbox use every email?
No. Google says AI Inbox surfaces information from messages in the Primary tab and filters out spam plus messages you archive, delete, mute or snooze. Attachments, delegated inboxes and encrypted emails are currently listed as unsupported.
Is Gmail AI Inbox the same as Gmail Live?
No. AI Inbox automatically surfaces suggested to-dos and important topics. Gmail Live is a conversational voice experience for asking questions about information in your inbox. Use the feature that matches the task rather than treating every Gmail AI feature as interchangeable.
The Bottom Line
When Gmail AI Inbox is not showing, random troubleshooting is rarely the best first move. Start by confirming that the account meets Google’s current requirements. Then check the correct Google Account, review the required Smart Features and look for Show AI Inbox under Gmail’s Inbox settings.
If AI Inbox is already visible but empty, treat that as a separate problem. Refresh the feature, check recent email activity, remember the documented initialization period and understand that AI Inbox only considers certain messages.
Remember: CHECK → ENABLE → WAIT → VERIFY
CHECK eligibility and the account. ENABLE the required settings. WAIT when Google says initialization needs time. VERIFY whether the emails you expected AI Inbox to use are actually eligible to surface.
Save or share this guide so the CHECK → ENABLE → WAIT → VERIFY troubleshooting method is easy to find when Gmail settings change.
