The ChatGPT OneNote plugin gives supported users a direct way to work with OneNote notes from ChatGPT and Codex. Instead of repeatedly copying notes into a chat, you can ask ChatGPT to find information, summarize pages, collect decisions and action items, and perform supported create or update actions.
The important part is access. Connecting OneNote does not automatically give ChatGPT permission to use every notebook you can open in Microsoft’s apps. Notebook ownership, workspace settings, Microsoft permissions, the ChatGPT surface you are using, and the specific action all matter.
What Is the ChatGPT OneNote Plugin?
The ChatGPT OneNote plugin is an OpenAI-developed plugin for working with supported Microsoft OneNote content through ChatGPT and Codex. OpenAI announced the plugin in Beta on September 3, 2026.
It is different from older tutorials that used manual copy and paste, third-party OneNote add-ins, automation platforms, or custom integrations to move information between OneNote and ChatGPT.
In the current system, the OneNote plugin can work with notes the connected Microsoft account is allowed to use through supported plugin workflows. Connecting the plugin does not expand your Microsoft permissions.
If the current plugin terminology is confusing, read our guide to how ChatGPT Plugins work in 2026. The modern Plugin Directory is different from the original ChatGPT plugin system many older tutorials describe.
What Can ChatGPT Do With OneNote?
The safest way to understand the plugin is to separate confirmed capabilities from actions that depend on permissions or notebook type.
| Task | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Find notes | Supported for notes available through the relevant supported workflow. |
| Summarize notes | Supported. You can narrow the request by notebook, section, page or date range. |
| Find decisions and action items | Supported. This is one of the capabilities OpenAI specifically highlights. |
| Create notes | Permission dependent. The relevant write action must be supported and allowed. |
| Update notes | Permission dependent. Read access does not guarantee edit access. |
| Copy a page | Supported in applicable workflows. Check that the operation completed before repeating it. |
| Access every notebook visible in OneNote | No. Notebook type, ownership and the supported plugin workflow can affect access. |
| Override Microsoft permissions | No. Connecting OneNote does not grant permissions you do not already have. |
How to Connect OneNote to ChatGPT
OpenAI says to find the OpenAI-developed OneNote plugin in Plugins and follow the connection prompts. The exact interface can vary by account, workspace, rollout and ChatGPT surface, so do not rely on an older screenshot as the only setup reference.
- Open ChatGPT on a surface where Plugins are available.
- Open Plugins or the Plugin Directory.
- Find the OpenAI-developed OneNote plugin.
- Start the connection process.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account connected to the notes you want to use.
- Review the permissions requested during authorization.
- Complete administrator approval if your organization requires it.
- Return to ChatGPT and begin with a small read-only request.
If the Plugin Directory or OneNote plugin does not appear, do not repeatedly disconnect accounts at random. Use our ChatGPT plugins not showing troubleshooting guide to separate workspace, account, availability and permission problems.
Use READ, VERIFY, WRITE Before Editing Important Notes
The fastest workflow is not always the safest workflow. For an important notebook, start by proving that ChatGPT has found the correct source before allowing it to make a change.
Why this matters
Imagine you have several project notebooks containing similar page names. A request such as “update my launch notes” leaves too much room for ambiguity. A better workflow first identifies the exact destination and proposed change.
Find the page that contains our latest launch decisions. Tell me the notebook, section and page name, summarize the decisions you found, and do not make any changes yet.
Before editing the page, show me exactly what you plan to add and where you plan to add it. Keep all existing notes unchanged unless I explicitly approve a replacement.
Which OneNote Notebooks Can ChatGPT Access?
This is one of the most important limitations to understand because “I can open this notebook in OneNote” and “the OneNote plugin supports this exact operation” are not the same thing.
| Notebook situation | What you should know |
|---|---|
| Notebook owned by your connected Microsoft account | Personal notebook operations are intended for notebooks owned by the connected Microsoft account. |
| Someone else’s personal notebook shared with you | OpenAI says a personal notebook shared with you may not appear in the personal-notebook workflow. |
| Microsoft 365 group notebook | Uses a separate supported shared-notebook workflow. Identify the group and intended notebook clearly. |
| SharePoint site notebook | Uses the supported shared-notebook workflow for that environment. Identify the site and notebook when asking for notes. |
| Notebook visible somewhere in Microsoft’s products | Visibility alone does not guarantee that every OneNote plugin operation supports that notebook type. |
8 Useful ChatGPT OneNote Prompts
The best prompts tell ChatGPT where to look, what job to perform, what output you want and whether it is allowed to make changes.
1. Find a specific decision
Search my [Notebook Name] notebook for notes from [date range]. Find the final decision about [topic], summarize it in plain English, and tell me which page it came from. Do not make any changes.
2. Summarize a project
Review the notes in [Notebook or Section] about [project]. Summarize the current status, key decisions, unresolved questions and next steps. Identify the source pages where possible.
3. Pull action items from notes
Find open action items in [Notebook or Section]. Group them by project. Include the owner and deadline only when they are actually stated in the notes, and mark missing owners or dates as not specified.
4. Prepare for a meeting
Review my recent notes about [project or topic]. Create a short meeting brief with decisions already made, unresolved questions, recent action items and anything that appears to need follow-up. Do not edit the notes.
5. Find information spread across multiple notes
Search [Notebook Name] for references to [topic]. Group the most relevant findings by page. Highlight information that appears inconsistent between pages instead of choosing one version without telling me.
6. Preview an update before making it
I want to update [Page Name]. Do not change anything yet. Show me the exact text you would add, tell me where you would place it, and identify anything already on the page that could conflict with the update.
7. Append confirmed meeting decisions
Append the confirmed decisions below to [Notebook, Section, Page]. Preserve all existing content and add the new information under a clearly labeled section dated today. Show me the destination and proposed text before performing the update.
8. Turn notes into next actions without inventing tasks
Review [Page or Section] and create a prioritized list of next actions. Separate tasks explicitly stated in my notes from suggestions you inferred. Do not change the notebook.
Why Can’t ChatGPT See My OneNote Notebook?
A missing notebook does not point to one single cause. Work through these checks in order.
1. Check the Microsoft account
Make sure the connected Microsoft account is the account that owns or has the relevant supported access to the notebook you want to use.
2. Check whether the notebook is owned or shared
A personal notebook owned by someone else and shared with you may behave differently from a notebook owned by your connected Microsoft account.
3. Check whether it belongs to a group or SharePoint site
Microsoft 365 group and SharePoint site notebooks use separate supported shared-notebook workflows. Be specific about the group or site and the notebook you want.
4. Check the ChatGPT workspace
If you have access to multiple workspaces, make sure you are using the intended one. A managed workspace can have plugin availability and permissions controlled by administrators.
5. Check whether Microsoft approval is required
Your organization may require a Microsoft administrator to approve permissions requested by the connection.
6. Narrow the search
If ChatGPT returns only part of what you expected, try specifying the notebook, section, page or relevant date range. Ask it to continue searching when appropriate before concluding that a note does not exist.
- Confirm the Microsoft account connected to ChatGPT.
- Confirm whether the notebook is personally owned or shared.
- Check whether it is stored in a Microsoft 365 group or SharePoint site.
- Make sure the OneNote plugin is available and enabled in your current workspace.
- Check whether administrator approval is pending.
- Narrow broad searches before assuming content is unavailable.
Can ChatGPT Create or Update My OneNote Notes?
Yes, the OneNote plugin supports create and update actions in supported workflows, but the ability to read notes does not automatically mean the connection can edit them.
Your workspace policy, Microsoft permissions and approval requirements continue to apply. OpenAI recommends specifying the destination notebook, section and page, and reviewing the intended target and change before authorizing an action.
Preview, Confirm, Authorize, Verify
For important notes, preview the proposed change first. Confirm the exact notebook and page. Authorize only the intended change. Then reopen or recheck the destination to make sure the result is what you expected.
Be especially careful when copying a page
OpenAI warns that an accepted copy request is not necessarily the same as a completed copy. If you are unsure whether a page copy finished, check the destination before repeating the request. Repeating an uncertain operation can create unnecessary duplicate work.
What if a write action fails?
Check whether the same Microsoft account can make the intended change directly, whether your ChatGPT workspace permits the action, and whether additional approval is required. Keep track of the exact target and error instead of retrying blindly.
Official ChatGPT OneNote Plugin vs Older Integrations
Search results for ChatGPT and OneNote can be confusing because many pages were written before OpenAI introduced its own OneNote plugin. Those older workflows are not necessarily wrong, but they may solve a different problem.
| Method | What it is | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Official OneNote plugin | OpenAI-developed plugin for supported OneNote workflows in ChatGPT and Codex. | Finding, summarizing and taking supported actions on OneNote content from ChatGPT or Codex. |
| Automation platform | A separate service that connects triggers and actions between apps. | Repeatable multi-app automations where OneNote is one part of a larger workflow. |
| Third-party OneNote add-in | A separately developed product installed or used with OneNote. | Features offered specifically by that third-party product. |
| Manual copy and paste | You copy text from OneNote into a normal ChatGPT conversation yourself. | Small one-off tasks when you do not want or cannot use a connected workflow. |
Is the ChatGPT OneNote Plugin Available to Everyone?
Do not assume universal availability. OpenAI introduced the OneNote plugin in Beta and says the plugin may not be available for all workspaces.
Available capabilities can depend on your account, workspace, ChatGPT or Codex surface, rollout status, Microsoft permissions and organizational settings.
That means two people can follow similar setup instructions and still see different options, especially when one person is using a managed work or school environment.
When Is the OneNote Plugin Actually Useful?
The plugin is most valuable when the difficult part of your note-taking workflow is not writing a single note, but repeatedly finding useful information across notes and turning it into something actionable.
When Should You Keep Using OneNote Normally?
AI does not automatically improve every note-taking task. If you already know exactly where a short note belongs and can add it faster yourself, using a plugin adds unnecessary steps.
The OneNote plugin becomes more useful when natural-language search, synthesis or cross-note understanding saves meaningful effort.
| Use OneNote directly when… | Consider the plugin when… |
|---|---|
| You are adding a quick note to a page already open. | You need to find information scattered across several notes. |
| You know exactly where the information is. | You remember the topic but not the notebook or page. |
| The edit is tiny and faster to make manually. | You want a summary, decision list or action-item extraction. |
| You need completely deterministic manual control. | You can review an AI-assisted result before relying on it. |

Bottom Line
The ChatGPT OneNote plugin is most useful when you need help finding, understanding or organizing information already stored across supported OneNote notebooks. It can also perform supported create and update actions when the required permissions are available.
The bigger lesson is not to treat the connection as unlimited access. Start with a narrow read-only request, verify the notebook and source material, then authorize a specific change only when you are confident ChatGPT is working with the right destination.
READ. VERIFY. WRITE.
Let ChatGPT find the information first. Verify the source and destination yourself. Then use supported write actions for the specific change you actually want.
